That's what I was wondering, too. Maybe... maybe it refers to the context of the next line "Play me one more song." Among some professional musician types a "song" is often called a "number." Kind of a stretch, I'm thinkin'. |

'Still The Same' is about the narrator's past friendship with a slick grifter who had schooled him in the soldier of fortune's way of life. The mentor was a scammer who took from life all that he could, never caring who might get hurt or if anything he did was morally right or wrong. There were only winners and losers, nothing more. The narrator had long ago moved on with a life more in tuned with the values in which he was raised when he ran into his old friend. Nothing about him had changed. His values, his methods were still the same, but now the narrator saw no excitment or glamour in his former mentor's gamesmanship. So he just walked away, knowing that nothing he could say would ever change his friend's grasp of what was truely important in life. |
