What I really like about Blaqk Audio is that their songs are very sexual but almost always have a deeper double meaning beneath them. I'm aware that this song isnt likely to be on the sophomore album, but it makes me really happy that they seem to be continuing with this trend. What AFIforeverz said about selling out definitely fits, but that doesnt ring true to me personally, and I think that if Davey had felt pressure about being somewhat androgenous, he would have dealt with it far before 2010. It's definitely a possibility though, and I like it. =) Undeniably this song is superficially about a prostitute, but I think that one possibility of a deeper meaning is about someone who made a life-altering mistake that at the time didnt seem like a big deal but now has disasterous consequences (this room is just for one night, but they never will let you go), and now the narrator feels deep empathy for the person. I feel like one of the most important lines in the song is "You see what you AND I have done?" It sounds like the narrator has been in this person's position before and feels great sorrow and pity for her. I think my favourite lines, though, are 'I'll be the last to know your name; I'll be the last to want to." It sounds so bitter and even a little mean. Like he is so disgusted by her that he wants nothing to do with her. I think those lines really sum up the desolate nature of the situation. |

At it's simplest, this song sounds like a relationship gone wrong due to a narrator's personal issues. Despite these personal issues, the narrator desperately wants to be with his lover... so this song is both an apology and a plea for a second chance. In an interview, Davey said that all the songs on CexCells had a sexual attachment to it, so I think that this song is describing the difficulty of loving someone (even loving someone romantically) but not feeling any sexual interest toward them. I feel like the most interesting part of the song were the lines "shall we burn it just like the last time / raise a glass and toast the flame just like the old days." The lines are simple enough to understand; he wants to relive old days and let this current problem fade to the past. However the references to the past both contain firey references, which I thought was really cool. The entire song is really passive --he's pleading to someone, but the references to fire suggest offensive-ness, pro-activity, determination, power... all really aggressive behaviors. It makes me feel like, although the narrator is submissive, he has a lot of suppressed anger. The ghost-like references in this supposition would be best explained as evidence of a crumbling relationship. He feels like because of his issues (supposedly sexual incapability), his lover is moving on and forgetting him, seeing through him, unable to relate to him, unable to touch him. xx I also really like the idea of this having to do with homosexuality. It does sound a lot like the narrator is confessing to someone apparently against homosexuality about his preferences and that he's sorry for being the way that he is, but he wants that person to accept him the way he is. Either way, the song is saturated in remorse and sorrow, and I honestly think it's one of the best on the albu. <3 |
