I am reminded of a lyric that Matt writes in "Lit Up" where he is comparing himself to a woman who can handle herself at a party -- that everyone loves her, while he can only make music "that lasts for one season, only heard by bedroom kids who play it for that reason." I think the National guys identify with geeks, the general term for outsider -- they understand the heroic love of Vanderlyle and they will sing about it forever "I'll explain everything to the geeks." I understand the hanging part might make one think of literal hanging, but I think "hanging from the chandelier" could just as easily mean the excessive partying of the heart-broken. He's actually telling Vanderlyle he's going to be all right during most o the song, that he will recover. Finally, I think "all the very best of us string ourselves up for love" -- it means if we dive head first into the human race, if we are people of compassion and heart, we will all get destroyed by love once or twice in our lives. "all the very best of us." I love this song. |
