| Townes Van Zandt – Only Him or Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| 'But heaven is the way she is/ rain falls and and rivers flow'. A song about a break up with no other reason than he's feelings aren't what they were and he has no way of ezplaining it. Nothing bitter about it, just that the magic has gone and there is no other option but to move on but he can still see the beauty in the x and that's the heartbreaking feature of the tune. | |

To me, this one is about searching for, and starting to think you will never find a true 'soul mate'. 'You're the only one i want and I've never heard your name' gives it away a little and the title 'highway kind' is a reference to the wandering existance of the writer. He's just meandering through the days, trying to get what he can out of them while waiting for something or someone to come along and make it all worth while. 'I'll meet the one's between us/be thinkin' about you/ all the places I have seen/ and why you were not there.. Typical Townes in the way he just observerd his own existance with equal amounts of sadness and pleasure. 'Time amongst the pine trees/ felt like breath of air, usaually i just walk these streets/tell myself to care. Being in the key of E minor though, I say it's more a loathing than a celebration of being 'The highway kind'. |

What a cracker! I'd say more about a break up with a good person because he was trying to re-live the glory days of yesteryear. 'I went out' to find these better days but they had gone and 'that was my mistake'. I can't see the depression link but if someone could clear it up I'd love to hear about it. Oh the melody |
