| John Mayer – Gravity Lyrics

This is Mayer steering himself away from the black-lung disease of all bluesmen/women: temptation. The only relationship in this song is between Mayer and his demons. "Twice as much" and "wanting more" will end bad and he knows it. The key is to a sustainable (i.e., not tragic) life lies in moderation ("one half"). He intones "keep me where the light is" as his personal mantra to stay away from the dark forces. Such as Anniston, I suppose. |

| Talking Heads – Wild Wild Life Lyrics

Forget drugs, this is about the wild landscape inside your head. First three verses, he/she's mad as a loon, possibly in an asylum ("the doctor in charge," "spends time behind closed doors") and "wrestling with your conscience," which I take to mean he'she's involved with internal moral/ethical debates while the normal world of Mr. Businessman is wrapped up with pursuit of physical pleasures ("you wrestle with your partner"). "Sleeping on the interstate" and "checking in, checking out" is pretty much a lifestyle of metal illness, alternating between being institutionalized and being marginalized. By the song's end, the narrator has become part of the straight world's version of wild, wild life ("take a picture (of me), here in the daylight"). The party's all inside your head. |

| Willie Nelson – Pancho And Lefty Lyrics

Part of the magic of TVZ was the way he hangs his laundry on the clothesline of the universal. I was told years ago by either Jerry Jeff Walker or Guy Clark that in Townes' view, Poncho = Jesus and Lefty = Judas. I was quite comfortable with that, as Townes' body of work is far more ethereal and spiritual than historical. And what worse a fate could one imagine for Judas than living in a cheap hotel in Cleveland? |

| Fountains of Wayne – Bought For A Song Lyrics

Before a rock band gets sold to the public with a record deal they usually get bought for a song, which you can read as the record company offers them a contract for a hit song or, more in the spirit of this band, they get offered a low figure to sign, meaning the record company buys their music for a song. |
