Tool – Culling Voices Lyrics 6 years ago
Despite invoking big ideas about the spirit, mind and universal human experience, Lateralus (and some of Aenima, like 46 & 2) were centered at the personal scale, the scale of a person's life journey. I think this song is literally about the voices rattling around in our head (the ones of our parents, mentors, friends, bullies, etc.) that we consult when making our decisions, where we get most of our morality from.

Ever imagine how a conversation would play out with a loved one who has passed away? Ever have the words of the people who hurt you most replaying in your head when you screw up? This is literally about culling those voices. Figuring out which ones are helpful, and which ones are just tripping you up. Nothing more or less.

Jamie N Commons – The Preacher Lyrics 6 years ago
@[matthewg0w:30519] Hah, thank you. It always bugs me when people start reading tea leaves when there's a perfectly good literal interpretation right there.

I will say though, there I think there is an allusion to the story of Abraham and Isaac from the old testament. You know, the dude who god told to sacrifice his son on a mountaintop, was totally going to go through with it, then at the last minute an angel from god stopped him (earning him praise from god but probably a Worst Father of the Year mug next Fathers Day from his son). The reference to the mountaintop and "your work's been done" bring that rather dark and messed up story to mind for me. I think he's claiming god told him to do it.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 14 years ago
See, this is what I'm talking about. You have evidence to suggest that this might be biblical, or in Hendrix's interpretation, about Vietnam. This may be one of those cases where it actually is about Jebus. But the point is you didn't reach that conclusion though some incredibly vague interpretation of lyrics.

Blink-182 – Adam's Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Pretty sure this song is about the perils of a global economy in this fast-paced world, and the hard lesson we learned from our prolonged occupation in Iraq. Either that, or a rock-ballad depicting the epic battle between Skeletor and Optimus Prime.

Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh come on, the lyrics are obvious. It's about a baggage carrier who is determined not to drop their luggage or "lay your burden down". He then goes to an Optometrist to get his eyes checked out over those shapes he keeps seeing behind his eyes. Finally, it is revealed that he is in fact Buffalo Bill, the one who "lived inside my skin". He finishes by fighting Count Chocula for the TriWizard Cup, flies around the world to turn back time and save the life of Fran Drescher. He marvels at his own heroism, looking down upon the Earth that is his to protect, becoming a "shadow on the sun" to those looking up at him.

It's so obvious I probably didn't even need to go into that much detail, but now it is all clearly laid out for those who are a bit slow.

Five Finger Death Punch – Far From Home Lyrics 14 years ago

I think it's about the Vietnam War, and how the only reason we invaded was because of oil and Hitler's WMD's.

Either that or its about a magical tap-dancing dog and his crazy misadventures with a talking loaf of wheat bread.

But really, basically the same thing.

Billy Joel – We Didn't Start the Fire Lyrics 15 years ago
Catchy song, but it doesn't take a lyrical genius to make non-sequiturs over such a broad topic rhyme. Don't believe me? Here's something I whipped up in like five minutes:

Androgynous Justin Bieber
Shitty music, disco fever

Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw,
NBC, Harry’s Law

Sarah Palin, Tina Fey,
Transformers Michael Bay

Billy Mays, snortin’ coke
Cheech Marin, Up In Smoke

Dirty Dancing, Patrick Swayze
Richard Pryor, Stir Crazy
Morgan Freeman, Miss Daisy
Billy Joel is pretty lazy

Them Crooked Vultures – New Fang Lyrics 15 years ago
Sometimes we have to put aside the notion that all songs have to have a profound meaning, or any meaning at all. Sometimes they're just a collection of words that sound nice together. I think in general the Vultures have a Cabaret Voltaire vibe to them.

Them Crooked Vultures – Reptiles Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm most likely wrong about the meaning (and I accept that), but when I hear this song I can't help but imagine a bunch of reptiles poking and prodding at a menagerie of humans in cages and behind glass. Anyone else picture that?

The Black Angels – Young Men Dead Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think it's about any one war in particular, but rather war in general. Sometimes it seems like old men make war, and young men die.

And for those who insist that it's about revolutions, I don't want to make presumptions but is there a chance you got that idea in your head from the Fable III commercials and their tagline, "It's a Revolution"? :P

Additionally, I don't see why it (or most songs even) necessarily has to have another level of symbols and/or meaning. I think even taken at face value, taken literally, this is the start of one hell of an intriguing story.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I've noticed a large pattern on this site, in regards to common themes that people tend to think songs fit into. The big obvious one is religion, the other being the big social context of whatever period the song was written in. For the 60's and 70's every song is apparently about Vietnam, and for our current decade they're all reputably about 9-11, George Bush or the Iraq war. For some, this may be completely true and absolutely the case, but I have a hard time believing 90% of all songs ever made are either about Jebus or the then current/recent war.

With a song like this I can see how it would be easy to think its about Vietnam. Hell, until I really looked at the lyrics I would have agreed with you. The first four lines ("There must be some kind of way out of here", ext.) sound a lot like a statement on Vietnam. But if you get locked into that train of thought right off the bat then you're going to have to really stretch the rest of the lyrics to make it fit.

Granted, I don't know what its about. And hell, it might be about religion or Vietnam. But if you're gonna make the claim, you need more than one or two lines that sorta-kinda-maybe-could-be about your theory. I'm not trying to insult anyone here, and no offense is meant, but please try not to jump to conclusions so damn fast.

Theory of a Deadman – I Hate My Life Lyrics 15 years ago
For six months I was sure that it was a Nickelback song, I shit you not.

Millionaires who complain about hobos and girls who don't tell them they're underage (whether its merely in song form or not) need to be shot in the genitals. And I'm not just making hyperbole here, people of the previously mentioned party are a waste of life and should not reproduce.

Tool – Sober Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song has two different speakers. I think part of the song is from the "perspective" of alcohol, the other half the alcoholic. The "Trust in me and fall as well", and "I will work to elevate you, just enough to bring you down" seem to be the booze talking.

Conversely, the main speaker talks about being stalked by his demons so to speak, making him full of regrets. This is what I presume to be the alcoholic talking. As for the "Jesus won't you fucking whistle something but the past and done?", it sounds kind of like, "Won't you stop reminding me of the past? What's done is done."

And yes, I know that this song is about a friend of the band, who despite being an alcoholic, produces great works when drunk.

Chris Cornell – You Know My Name Lyrics 15 years ago
He's saying that you're trying to fit the song into the "God and Lucifer" box. He's saying that once you got it into your head that that's what it was about, you tried your hardest to make a square peg fit into a round hole. No offense man, but your interpretation is a colossal stretch. It's full of references to the movie, and gambling phrases in particular.

And before you say, "it can mean whatever you want it to mean", Chris Cornell has talked about it being a musical introduction to the new Bond;

"Lyrically I think it had to echo the opening several minutes of the film, where he's not yet 007, he's not the James Bond we know of yet. The title You Know My Name kind of came from that. We're trying to introduce a character in a song, even though this is the 21st move made about them - how do you do that? It was as simple as what this character has to deal with, such as committing murder for the first time, and really introducing himself to what may be the rest of his life and how he will live it and what it will mean. That's more than enough to write a three and a half minute song about."

Sorry, but "You know my name (Lucifer)" doesn't hold water.

tobyinit, that's the best post I've ever seen on this site, and you sir just won the internet.

In all seriousness though, I can't stand people jumping to a bunch of conclusions from just one or two words, especially when it doesn't hold up throughout the song. If you're gonna make claims, you gotta back it up. I saw one guy trying to argue that the Chris Cornell song "You Know My Name" (the one that was used in Casino Royale) was about god and his angels.
