I believe it's a surreal song narrating the death of Stonewll Jackson with commentary on the world, both now and over the vista of time. His soul rises and leaves the earthly bonds and goes to "the souls in heaven who we'll meet..." God bless Bob Dylan, a greater poet this age has not known. |

I think it's a stretch, because the point of the Prodigal Son is in the return. In Simon's song the fact that he's leaving, goin' home is sad and defeated. The other story is the opposite, rejoicing at what was lost had now been found. This may be my all-time favorite song, one I fell in love with the 1st time I heard it and never grew tired of it. Many people grew tied of me wearing it out over and over. The original version, with the heavy percussion and the long, sad drawn out ending, finishing with soft sweet folk guitar chords brings me to tears everytime. Like most great songs you get it (or most of it ) but there's always the deeper, emotional aspect that is beyond comprehension, or the ability to fully express it all. Dylan and Simon ....my favorite little jewish boys....big brothers who keep teaching me year in and year out. |

| Bob Dylan – Abandoned Love Lyrics

I think the brilliance of this song is that Dylan is talking about abandoning the love of self, the egotistical nature we have as kids that must die, in order to live a life not void of meaning. He is in a sense, breaking up with himself, no longer stuck on himself. but it's hard to not always put yourself and your own wants and desires first. It's a struggle. I find it funny how most people think it's about the end of a romantic relationship, but I think that's what Mr. D had in mind anyway. He is the most brilliant songwriter of the century, in a time where there were many who were truly great. I know I'll ot see his like again. |

There's nothing to suggest a war overseas. In the Civil War a person who had been drafted Could (for $300) buy his way out of the draft. I think this is the underlying reality between the songs narrator and the one he's sings about. The love isn't romantic in anyway but, Like Jesus showing the greatest love is that a man should lay down his life for his fellow man. I could be wrong, but I think lines like I was paid, and remorse or regret in the fairness of our trade. There was nothing fair since only the rich had the choice to buy a substitute to go to war. Really sad song and interesting perspective. I'm old (54) and a history teacher, so I now a bit about that war, and I would bet the farm that Mr. Tweedy nows whereof he sings. Great song. |
