Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Loom of the Land Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song was probably inspired by numerous sources. I was reading a short story that struck me as being somewhat similar to this song and may have been partly inspirational. It's a beautifully written and very dark story by Leonid Andreyev called The Abyss. It's free to read online if anyone is interested. It's a similar story but what triggered the comparison was the word usage that is similar to Nick Cave’s song. I just thought I'd bring it to the table for interest sake.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Cannibal's Hymn Lyrics 13 years ago
I find this song pretty criptic but there are a few things that may shed some light. First of all I wanted to know what was meant by
'pink paper pinafore'?
I know pinafore is a dress, but a paper dress??? I couldnt find anything about this but I did find a famous comic-opera from back in the late 1870s called the HMS Pinafore which tells of a girl who is meant to marry a noble but is in love with a sailor, which brings to mind
'Those heathens you hang with down by the sea'.
It could be that the nobleman is singing the song to her. But still the PAPER pinafore...nothing!

When I listen to it and read the lyrics I find the whole song almost menacing. At first it would appear that he cares for the girl but at the same time he just wants to have his turn with her (I get this from his forward sexual imagery). He tells her of a place where they can be alone, where he can 'rock' her. He is trying to seduce her, but she is damaged goods. Killers are known to target damaged goods, prostitutes, girls that are off having fun with sailors, the cannibals.

'I can see that they've hurt you, dear
Here is some moonlight to cloak us
And I will never desert you here
Unpetaled among the crocus
Allow me, my love, to allay your fear
As I swim, in and out of focus'

Why are they alone at night? And what is meant by 'unpetaled amoung the crocus'? Why is he 'in and out of focus'? Well if you wanted to kill someone you'd want privacy, under the cover of night. Crocus if consumed is poisonous and even fatal. That would explain why she has blurred vision.

I think the song could be about killing or even suicide, they ate the flower together. He could have poisoned her hoping to have his way with her. I dont think he really loves her, he just wants to get off.

I love the criptic ones.
