I think this song is about being in a relationship with someone generally unbearable to most, and even unbearable to the singer in the beginning. The person is only looking for love. The singer begins to see all the other person's faults as endearing. It's a "stranger's nightmare" but it's his dream, and he doesn't want to change, even if they're both going down. "We're going to flood this house." |

Some how, I don't think Maryanne is either a boat or a woman, but the sea itself. "kisses you till your lips bleed" - reference to the wind? And she's a bitch because all those sailor's want to go back to their woman; but she wont let them. "She won't take her dress off." She's just a tease; she promises that this is worth it but doesn't quite make it okay that they can't see their girlfriends. |

I think this is about rough sex as a means of dealing with something. |

She said I know but I just can't tell everything That you've just been saying Lucy was there as well in the dark When the kids in the band were playing No one could hear a word or tell What the girl was singing She just must've been sixteen or eighteen Or just past caring So these two are "more than friends" but not a couple. She's confused and wants to talk, but all he's concerned about is the pretty singer in the club. She was into the stones when I was into the roses She was breaking my bones while I was bustin her noses She would tell me a secret I woud lose it the next day Young love pleases you easy makes you sick in a bad way They're different and argue a lot, and this is his excuse as to why they shouldn't be a couple. He doesn't want to be tied down. And all the while the girl sang la la la la she sang Kickin's for my sweetheart Bruises that I just don't miss So now he finally thinks she's done and had it with him, and is going to give up and on the outside he's glad. And she said I can't love you an anymore than this But then she says that she didn't want to have a relationship with him anyway that's what she wanted to talk to him about in the club. This intrigues him. She said she said oh no no no But then again yes why don't you kill me I said wait a minute stop right there sweetheart Y'know that don't thrill me So he asks her out, and she blows him off, but then reconsiders. She uestions his motives in a way like, " Sure, I'll go out with you, I know how you like to have sexual relations with people that don't matter to you so you can throw them away without guilt." and he denies it. Said I would've been in there If only I'd been a little bit nicer I was dead by Sunday Half dead skint just tryin to please her He then tries to back up his denial, but she says maybe she date him if he was a nicer guy, and he nearly kills himself trying to get her attention now She was getting me pills when I was into her best friend She was chasin the thrills and livin out in the west end She was pretty in places I lived under her window She said take me to London tell me something I don't know He's remembering how she used to be, timid and obedient to him because she liked him, and how he used her, but did think that she was good looking. And all the while the girl sang la la la la she sang Kickin's for my sweetheart Bruises that I just don't miss Now she's playing with him, and saying that her life is so much better and repeating herself like the time she broke up with him And she said I can't love you an anymore than this But by repeating this line, it makes it seem like she's telling him that she does kind of have feelings for him. She was into the stones when I was into the roses She was breaking my bones while I was bustin her noses She would tell me a secret I woud lose it the next day Young love pleases you easy makes you sick in a bad way And now the tables are turned! They still fight, but now he's trying to keep up with her and he's disgusted with himself that he's become so whipped. And all the while the girl sang la la la la she sang Kickin's for my sweetheart Bruises that I just don't miss And she said I don't like you, you can't stand me And she finally says that they shouldn't be together because they fight so much, I can't love you anymore than this But she does love him and finally accept him, but warns him that it's going to be hard. Like, "I can't be any nicer and sweeter to you than this." Anyway, that's what I got out of it. I could be dead wrong. |
