i completely understand where you're coming from, but i can't imagine ben would wait ten years to make the same connection. plus, it's pretty clear that the "belly of the beast that is californ-i-a" is...california. it just doesn't seem feasible that it's the same belly of the beast, even as a metaphor. anyway, beautiful song though. fun to play on guitar! |

apcryphia, you probably have the most sensible breakdown of this song in my eyes. i also like how you acknowledge that a song can be spiritual WITHOUT having to portray a strictly christian message. so props to you. thank you for your interpretation! |

| Jack's Mannequin – Holiday From Real Lyrics

I think that this song is all about living the hard, fast, California rock lifestyle. I think that "being much too thin" is because of drug use, since many drug addicts lose a lot of weight. Obviously, the "scoring an eighth from the lesbians" is getting weed or some other drug. His hair is getting long because quite frankly, he doesn't give a shit. "Frying his brains" and taking a "holiday from real" is most likely getting high. He's looking for work because he's running out of money to get his drugs, so he's putting on his glasses so no one can see his eyes (which are probably huge from being high) and who wants to hire some stoner? Hence his hiding behind his glasses. The safety buzz is getting 'buzzed' because he can't afford drugs anymore because he doesn't have a job. Finally, yes, i do detect sarcasm in saying he'll lie and tell his friends it's so much fun out there. I've been a long time fan of Jack's Mannequin, since his first album, but i was only 8 years old when it came out. I'm 14 now, so i'm finally making the connection of the drug habits in the song. kinda sad, but i love Andrew nonetheless. |

holty, i agree with you 100%. this song is absolutely beautiful. couldn't have said it better myself. this song, immediately followed by 'San Tropez' on the album, is an incredible combination, because it goes from beautiful and dreamy, to upbeat and jazzy. i LOVE Pink Floyd!! |

i think this song is about going through suicide, and every time the person is thinking of killing themselves, they call this one friend. towards the end, when he says 'you saved me from falling, saved me from falling, i'm so in love with you' he's saying that he's finally over this period of life where he wants to kill himself, and he's realizing he's in love with this one friend because he/she's helped him/her through so much. |

i understand and agree with everyone's opinions and thoughts about the song's meaning, but i have a different outlook on it. while i do believe you can find great meaning in anything, even the smallest things, i don't always think that you necessarily HAVE to find it. i mean...some people spend their whole lives thinking about what life is about and why it exists, but not me. i just sit back, and enjoy it, no need to ponder it. i'm not saying that this song doesn't have meaning, and that it's a waste of time to put thought into that, but i just think it's not totally necessary. i just think it's a beautiful song that's meaningful to the guys of Dispatch. just my take on it. |

they are, in fact, the correct lyrics, but maybe it's saying that the character in the song is a drinker, maybe like...a drink 'on the rocks' would be with ice...and 'time passed and that was that...' i think that's saying that life is a monotony, and they're getting caught up in it. it reminds me of the Pink Floyd lyric from the song 'Time'. the lyric goes: '...And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you. No one told you where to run, you missed the starting gun.'
now, i'm questioning whether this song is about suicide or the "rat race." music_man122, you are very thought provoking. i LOVE this site. |

i was thinking exactly the same exact thing...but i've never gotten self-injury out of any of DCFC's songs...maybe it's the only one? it's a possibility... |

i can't quite grasp the lyric 'other than a sick desire for self-abuse.' is Gibbard referring to self-injury? and when he says 'it's like you're in some kind of hurry to say goodbye' is it possibly a girl who also struggles with self-injury, that, after time/him leaving her, develops into suicidal tendencies? just my thoughts, i may be totally wrong. but...i can't help but think...
incredible song, one of my all time favorites |

i second that. Ben Gibbard is my favorite singer/songwriter, he along with Andrew McMahon of Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin are both ungodly unique in their lyrics. i absolutely long this song, it's so beautiful, yet haunting. can't wait for the next scheduled DCFC album coming out in 2011(: |

tiny vessels, i believe, is the song you're thinking of. i do agree with what you're saying, but, however, do keep in mind that the album Transatlanticism came much after Something About Airplanes. but that was a good link, either way |

i don't think so, i would have a hard time believing that Andrew uses drugs, especially something as hard as cocaine. i may be wrong, and some people may make the argument that his lyrics are so creative that they HAVE to be drug related, but i think that in order to be musically successful, you have to be at least a little bit crazy. just take that with a grain of salt(: |

i absolutely love this song. i think it's incredibly beautifully written, and the lyrics are so meaningful. i think that it's saying that he's breaking up with a girl, or he may be leaving his family. "Always know that i'll come back to you" i think is saying that he'll return to see his family/girlfriend, but he just doesn't know when it'll be. i love Andrew's voice, and his piano playing is absolutely beautiful. like a true Andrew McMahon fan, "Konstantine"'s play-count on my itunes is 126. Thank God that Andrew survived his leukemia. |
