Alabama Shakes – Hold On Lyrics 13 years ago
Love the song for Brittany's vocals and the band's rather unique blend of blues and southern rock. I saw them perform this song on Letterman's show and was blown away. Within minutes after their appearance I downloaded the song and the lyrics and read about them on Wickipedia.

Brian Ferry – Slave To Love Lyrics 14 years ago
The emotional impact of this ballad, like so many others by Brian Ferry, is truly enhanced by the concert and/or video medium. Unlike so many other music artists, the visuals definitely complement his vocal performance.

The Beatles – The Long and Winding Road Lyrics 15 years ago
According to the Beatles Interview Database 2004, Beatles producer George Martin said Phil Spector's "overproduced remix" was "uncharacteristic" of the Beatles. According to songwriter Paul McCartney, his "long and winding road" was inspired by B842, a thirty-one mile (50 km) road in Scotland that winds along the east coast of Kintyre into Campbeltown, and part of the eighty-two mile (133 km) drive from Lochgilphead.[6] In an interview in 1994, McCartney described the lyric as "a rather sad song. I like writing sad songs, it's a good bag to get into because you can actually acknowledge some deeper feelings of your own and put them in it. It's a good vehicle, it saves having to go to a psychiatrist."

Nevertheless, the Spector version went on to become the group's twentieth and final US #1 hit.

Robyn – Dancing On My Own Lyrics 15 years ago
For me, the song evokes feelings of "being on the outside looking in" from my dance club days. Quite often I lacked the confidence (courage?) to approach women out of a fear of being rejected. In an interview with Pitchfork Media, a Chicago-based daily Internet publication focusing on independent music, Robyn said her song is about feeling lonely in a club. She said "People get drunk and turn into themselves in a way, and they go to experience some kind of emotion. But it's not always about fun. There's a destructive side to it. But I'm more into the empowerment of going out, because it's always been the place where I could be myself and get inspired. Even if I'm sad, dancing is a way to let stuff out."

The The – This Is the Day Lyrics 15 years ago
Thanks for the info on Johnson, a very creative artist indeed. I Only "discovered" this gem recently listening to XM 80s. Belatedly, I've come to realize my rock and roll knowledge of 80s music was quite vanilla, main stream. In the past year my focus has been to redress my naivete by aggressively pursuing "alternative music" through a broad variety of media... satellite, internet, FM, etc.

I also enjoy "Uncertain Smile" from "Soul Mining," and will check-out the other albums you suggest. As to interpretation, the lyrics bring to mind the poet Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken." Retrospective thoughts (what ifs) plague most of us I think.

On the flipside, consider the song "Regret", co-written by New Order's Bernard Sumner. In it, he insists retrospection/second-guessing/wondering what-if is pretty much a waste of time.

I DO love rock and roll!
