I actually thought of a few more lines to support my theory:
"She went under the cover with her torch" - The torch or lighter to cook the Heroin.
and
"With a parrot on your shoulder saying everything when you talk" - The parrot is the addiction controlling your life and pretty much making decisions for you. |

"You will fall asleep with ants in your pants"
I actually did think of the fact that this could be related to dope sickness. Not necessarily the itch from using...but the feeling you have in your legs when you are sick. |

I think this song is about an intelligent girl who becomes a Heroin addict...(seriously this song sounds like my life story).
A lot of the lyrics suggest an intelligent girl who has at least turned down SOME wrong path:
"She gave herself to books and learning"
BUT
"Judy, where did you go wrong?"
"Judy was a teenage rebel"
Why I think that wrong path is Heroin addiction:
"Judy never felt so good except when she was sleeping" - Being high on Heroin is kind of like sleeping.
"Judy, you're just trying to find and keep the dream of horses" - Trying to find that first Heroin high again.(Horse is slang for Heroin)
"Walking the street from morning to night" - Prostituting herself for Heroin.
Please don't attack me because you hate when people say that songs are about drugs. This is merely my interpretation of the song. It could very well be wrong, but it certainly makes sense, does it not? |

It's not about growing up...Many songs really are about drugs. I don't know if this one is. Also, many songs may not have intentionally been about drugs, but that is what a percentage of the listeners get out of it. If that is the case, who cares? There is no absolute meaning in life (or good music). Each individual creates his/her own reality. |

The line should be "as she sticks a dirty needle deep into her vein."
And I agree with flowsen...after "here we go" that music is (one of) the closest thing you'll get to a hit of smack next to actually doing it. I also agree with the Velvet Underground comment, too. But, it's hard for me to say it's the best example after having heard songs such as "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" and "Cop Shoot Cop" by Spiritualized. |

I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for saying this...but...to me...and this is just TO ME, the song uses the book "Venus in Furs" as a metaphor for Heroin addiction. |

Seriously! But, they could be referencing just pure ol' coke. I would choose coke over crack any day. Only time I ever smoke crack is if it's free. It's weird how many times people will give me a hit of crack for free, but very rare for a free hit of Heroin to pass my way...Too bad. |

It's about Heroin!!!!!
Just kidding..I just wanted to see who I could piss off.
But, White Horse is slang for Heroin. Obviously this song is not about that...but wouldn't it be funny to hear Taylor Swift singin' 'bout good ol' Heroin? |

There are way too many people on this site who freak out if someone mentions the word "drugs." Cool it, all ready! Perhaps that is what that person gets from this song. And that is fine. If you get a different meaning, that's good, too. I honestly don't know what this song is about, but I wouldn't rule out drugs just because people are sick of so many songs being about drugs. Drugs...and especially Heroin...have inspired some great music, so it's no skin off my nose if there are many songs about drugs. |

More like Heroin:
"strike your match, cook it up"
When injecting meth, you never cook it up. When injecting some forms of Heroin you do...luckily I don't get the shit that you have to cook around here. |

Apparently not all that obvious, supernuke.
SHE doesn't set his soul on fire...Heroin does.
Two pretty obvious examples:
"I got a hurricane inside my veins and i wanna stay forever" -> Heroin in veins
"cut through with silver" -> Needle cutting through skin
Not to mention that most Spiritualized songs deal with Heroin.

I take a bit of a different interpretation of the line, "fix this poor bad dreamer." I think it is such a powerful and almost scary line. To me it is the Heroin speaking to the addict. Basically it is saying 'We don't need all these dreamers worrying about change and a better life. Stay with me and you won't have to worry about such "poor, bad things."' Even though dreaming isn't poor/bad, Heroin doesn't want you to dream about a better life, because if you do, you might leave it.
The absolute truth is that doing Heroin will stop you from dreaming and hoping of anything at all. All that consumes you is how you're going to get your Heroin, then consequently actually getting it, and then doing it. |

"Monkey on my back, aching in my bones" are clearly references to Heroin. Heroin addiction is referred to as the monkey on your back. When you go through Heroin withdrawl your bones ache. This is why I have to disagree with the love meaning. Unless of course, you mean the love of Heroin. |

This song IS about Heroin to me. I am not just assuming. And like a few others have said before, it may be about something comletely different to you.
Also, the fact that I think it is about Heroin has nothing to do with the time period or musicians. As a recovering Heroin addict, this song just feels like Heroin to me. Perhaps you disagree, but don't patronize me or imply that I am an idiot because of the way this song hits me. |

Actually....In reference to that oh so bold comment about Godsmack...No, it doesn't refer to a deity on heroin, but "God's name is Smack to some." The quoted line is a line from the song Godsmack by Alice in Chains. It is the song that Godsmack got their name from. And that line means that Heroin is like God to some people. If you ever have done Heroin, you that would make so much sense. |

I can not believe that no one has commented on this song! The music is just so beautiful and haunting and the lyrics, so powerful. It is about Heroin. Which is very fitting considering how the music sucks you in with it's beauty just like Heroin does. |

To those who keep saying stuff like it sounds so sweet and beautiful, I can't believe it actually has the dark meaning of Heroin behind it, I want to say this:
Just beacause it is about Heroin, doesn't mean it has a dark meaning behind it. In fact the fact that the song sounds so sweet and beautiful is because of how sweet and beautiful Heroin can be. Yes, it can also cause quite a few problems (I should know) but this song celebrates the good parts of Heroin. Heroin in itself is not evil, so just leave poor Heroin alone. Heroin is actually one of the safest drugs for your body. If only it weren't so addictive. No one ever wants to defend Heroin. Well, I'm here for you little buddy. |

This song being about Heroin doesn't underestimate the talent of the band/Hugh Cornwell (writer). The imagery he uses to describe Heroin is amazing and shows talent, even if it is about Heroin. |

I wish Snatch never put this song in their movie. (Though it is a good movie.) Because now you have all these annoying people posting about how much they love Snatch instead of giving the real admiration where it belongs - to the Stranglers and this amazing song. |

I am going to see Hugh Cornwell (not Cornwall) this Friday at a pretty small venue and I'll see what he has to say this time. I've read interviews from the band stating it was about heroin, as well as about some tan girl. I wonder if he'll appreciate me telling him that I used to shoot up to this song....Probably not. |

Not cocaine, but Heroin, as others have said. Most people do not do coke do escape. It is a lot of fun, but certainly won't help you escape like Heroin does. Also, cocaine does not induce withdrawal. It is most certainly psychologically addictive, but there is little to none physical addiction. But, my god, Heroin on the other hand produces some pretty horrific, intense withdrawal. |

Wow! Just Wow! That is one of the only lines in this song I have always wondered about. I of course got that he is talking about injecting Heroin. However, I always wondered what exactly "ex-wife" meant. Your explanation is absolutely brilliant. I never even came close to thinking that. Thank you so much for completing what that line means to me. You have seriously made my day. Perhaps even my week. |

It used to be titled "Big Problem" probably because the song is a metaphor for Heroin. Heroin is indeed a "Big Problem." I should know. |
