I agree that this song can be interpreted in many different ways. This is my take on it. I believe this song is a very personal “meditation”: a moment of this woman coming into her own. “On the sea”, is where she imagines herself, this is where she can be anonymous. She can forgive herself for whatever haunts her from her past. The sea is a metaphor for anywhere completely alone, un-observed. “Our bodies stopped, the spirit leaving” means that now that she’s away from everything and everyone, she can actually be one with herself, no distractions, no influences Through this moment, this in and out breath of contemplation. She sees deep into her past and through this solitude finds her “soul”. Her heart. Her past seems tumultuous and there is a lot of pain there. She’s struggling to understand who she is because she’s easily influenced by those close to her. But she wants to know her true self, not what someone else told her to be. Taking time for her mind and body shows her the way. It’s very beautiful really. It could mean the end of life or suicide as some suggest, but it can also mean finally seeing the human experience for what it really is. “Nobody made you” the true anonymity of who we all are. And that we can actually choose who we want to be. The first few paragraphs seem like her deep thoughts, but “barreling down the steps, only a moment left” means that soon she will wake up, back in her real daily life. She’s not really on the sea, she was in a dream or dream state. The world swallowing her in is her waking up from these deep realizations and having to actually get through the day. In truth, she has no idea who she is. But she knows how she wants to move forward, Looking back at her past only causes pain and she doesn’t want to carry that burden with her any longer. So she takes her days one moment at a time, she tries to be true to herself. In time, she can only Be who she wants to be remembered as. Her actions will prove her value and goodness. And through these actions she will show her true self. |

| This is my very favorite song of Mumford & Sons. I really agree with your views of it's meaning, and also the person who replied and gave their views. Thank you both so much! | |

These are just my thoughts on the song, I don't know if they are at all even close to what they are supposed to be. I love this song so much. (I used to see the night so anxious, but now I know) When he first started going out, and seeing what night life was like he loved it, he couldn't wait for it, but he's learned a lesson about it) (The only thing it ever taught me was a grand illusion That comes and goes, the city blanketed of snow) Now that he knows the night life wasn't all it's cracked up to be (ie can be riddled with bad choices, and painful situations), it's like how snow covers the city and makes everything look completely different than what they really are, what's underneath. (What if we die, no end and no conclusion How could you smile, just walk away Well I don't know, I don't know) He's lost someone that left without an explanation. There wasn't a bad experience, it just ended, that's why he says, "How could you smile, just walk away" nothing bad happened, it was just over. (I met you at the railroad station, now years ago And something happened on the night I last drank with you in the neon glow Now I don't see you anymore) Right here he's thinking about the beginning of the relationship, and just about the experiences that happened, and are now just over. Something bad may have happened on the last night they spent together. (The Midwestern sky is gray and cold The sun never shines, but that's alright) The only thing I really get from this line, is when he says, "that's alright" like he's not wanting to let go just yet, he's still feeling the pain of it, and so he's accepting of that pain. (And I couldn't find the letters that you wrote me What did you write, where'd you go, well I don't know, no) As time passes the experiences are starting to fade. He doesn't want to let go yet, but life just keeps moving forward. (Take a little time, gonna roll the dice Taken for a ride, any normal life will do, too) After a little while, he's gonna be able to let it all go, and basically start over, a new chance. "roll the dice" He'll even be ok if it's just a normal boring life. (Find another way, try to break the ice Every day and night, the banana peels were true, true) The banana peels sound weird, but someone above mentioned about how people slip on banana peels, and it's that he had to learn that lesson on his own. People say you will slip on a banana peel, well, they were right. I especially love how this song just ends abruptely, no real ending or fading out. Exactly how the relationship ended. It was just.....over. |

I think the beginning, when he says, "Stand up straight at the foot of your love I lift my shirt up" is about when he gets back home, he is presenting his real/old self. "Stand up straight", he faces it bravely, even though he's scared/nervous, because going back home can be hard. "At the foot", meaning he still feels like a child. "Of your love", he can be vulnerable because there is love and acceptance. "I lift my shirt up", he doesn't literally lift his shirt, it's saying he is exposed. Metaphorically naked around his family because they know him. He can't hide. That's all I've got for the first part. I think most people who are talking about going home and the "buzz" that you get, whether good or bad, are basically correct. Great song |
