| To "shoot the moon" or "shoot for the moon" is to go for broke, to put all your efforts into doing something, so that if you fail it is not for lack of trying. As someone mentioned about Hearts - when you shoot the moon it is all or nothing. You either take all the point cards & win big, or you take almost all the point cards & lose big. Maybe in this context it means "good luck with going all out & doing your best - it won't be enough". | |

I like your interpretation - this is what I think you are saying: "We talked Together sharpening a knife" - making a circumstance (having an affair) that will cut/hurt us both if we're not careful "Like killing partners for a life" - like killing each other with the pain their actions/affair causes each other "Hey, we can hide the bodies on the ride home" - we can pretend we didn't really do the things we did together. Hide the evidence of having the affair. "Strike a match, pour gasoline Ditch the scene and watch the city burn" - let's run away from the reality of what we did & pretend it never existed, like a city that is burnt to the ground. It doesn't sound like a healthy relationship. To say that they are star-crossed lovers is putting it mildly. "I'll be reaching for the stars with you, honey Who cares no-one else believes" - no one believes they should be together, but he does. "So I set fire to everyone around but you" I'll burn everyone else out of my memory & focus only on you - you are all I see. "I told you we'd do it So ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha yeah, we won" I told you we'd be lovers. But it's kind of a sarcastic laugh - we didn't win the prize of having a real relationship, we are in a painful affair. That's a joke prize at best. He wants it to work, but there's no proof in the song that they will ever really be together or if she'll go back to whomever she is actually with (remember this is an affair outside her "real" relationship.) | That's kind of how I see it too. This song freaks me out because my cousin was married to one of the most prolific serial killers in the US for several years - they even lived in the apartment above my grandmother's house. Too close for comfort, & no one even knew until the FBI arrested him. Anyway, I am reading the other song meanings here to try to get over my own interpretation and try to see something good in this song. I love the music, so I wish the words didn't freak me out so much. | |
