As a number of people have commented on, this song is about Death coming for him. Death is personified as with the Grim Reaper (who's talons the title refers to) or Angel of Death. The combination of the lines 'Fate came for me when I was looking the other way, a new disease came in the post for me today' combined with the knowledge that Kele is homosexual, and the general theme of the song, would imply that Kele (or at least the persona he's adopting) has contracted HIV. Hence him trying to outrun this malevolent force that is coming for him, but being unable to, and no bolt nor brick or crucifix keeping it at bay, and also the fact that Death, and most probably the very same disease has 'saddened his friends and claimed all his lovers'. I would agree with the other posts that say the lines about him being wicked and arrogant relate to his being promiscuous and unprotected despite knowing the risks, but thinking it would never happen to him. The line 'When did you become such a slut?' could actually be directed at himself in anger at where his antics have got him, or they could be directed toward Death/Fate because he describes the actual taking of life in this manner as being like a kiss (the Kiss of Death), and the Reaper has been kissing (killing) a lot of people he knows. |

Am I the only person that interprets this as the narrator being dead trying to comfort and console his living girlfriend? Everyone else on here seems to think she's the one that's dead. As I see it, basically she's falling apart without him, and he's telling her to please hold on. He tells her to follow him when the worst is said and done - eventually she'll die and be reunited with him but until then just 'close your eyes and see me', he's still with her in memory. Him saying 'come to me with the worst you've said and done' is him still offering her his support from the other side, in the way people talk to headstones or photos of their lost loved ones. I think the car crash in slow motion isn't a literal reference, but more how she's totally falling to pieces. I think all the stuff where he's saying her death by information won't disturb the peace on distant stars and her cry for inspiration not reaching ears there relate to all the things racing through her mind keeping her up, and her praying to the heavens for answers and explanations, but he's telling her not to trouble herself with such worries because she won't find any answers in the ether, stop keeping herself awake with anxiety, sleep. And yeah, I'd imagine experiencing the death of someone you know would definitely give everything in life more meaning. It is odd though that they chose to name the song Little Death when it's widely know that La Petite Mort is a euphemism for orgasm. Were it early Blink I might've interpreted 'You'll close your eyes and see me, a little death makes life more meaningful' as the girl thinking of him whilst she gets herself off! But that's not really where any of those boys are at these days... Great song and album though. I hope the reformed Blink make stuff as good as their last and best or it'll be a shame to not get anymore +44. Although I guess that means no more Angels & Airwaves either, so every cloud... Cheers to the person that posted the correct lyrics. |
