Dude. You guys are reading too much into it. Trent Reznor just wanted to break up the heavy mood of the album with a silly, lighthearted song about a woman who was born with lizard DNA. I mean......didn't he? |

I thought the suicide (attempt) happened in the previous track, and then "Hurt" was the aftermath of that attempt. My main gripe with the Johnny Cash version of the song was that he toned it down. And I don't mean like, he didn't say the "S word." I mean he changed the notes, the scale of the melody and made it more diatonic, less dissonant, less beautiful. The musical equivalent of trying to make sushi taste better by pouring ketchup on it. |
