The lyrics are originally written by The Ludes, so when listening maybe the perceptive of the song is from a man's not a woman's so a lesbian experience to me is not really relative with the lyrics expect from when we hear it from the female vocals of Florence and the Machine. The Ludes also are a punk band, they kinda remind me of The Misfit's a little, so I think there's more of a grimace undertone that stews throughout the song to pick up on. The beginning lyrics "She told me not to step on the cracks", I told her not to fuss and relax' deals with a man and woman, the man must be cautious with everything he does around the woman and the man becomes more irate as the song progresses by her actions. In the beginning of the relationship between the two it was he who fell for her, she stopped him in her tracks now the woman must sleep with one eye open meaning she better be the cautious one and that's what she gets for her consistent nagging. The following lyrics deal with him becoming more aggressive I believe reillymouse was correct with the slipping her a smile being the Glasgow smile and not literally cutting out her eye but threatening her, now she sleeps with one eye open, telling her to get her fingers out of HIS pie, maybe its a personal experience with one of the original band members becoming famous and his relationship is this song, his pie is his earnings and he cry's because hes upset she brought it to the point where he had to lose it for her to straighten up. Finally with him putting his hand up her skirt and his reputation being "clouded" maybe its dealing with wanting to wait and him pushing it on her. None the less its a great song; lyrics and vocals. Wish though there was the original version to listen to it would be interesting to see how they, The Ludes, would play it. |

| demimondaine and drmn have very good views about the song. It is a very subjective song asking you to look inside for the answers or lyrics to express the feelings it portrays to you. Some comments noted on the absence of lyrical content but it expresses, in my opinion, a personal type of lyrical definition. It gives you a canvas instead of a picture. The title asks you to question yourself; imagine looking into a mirror and wondering what and who you are. If you can see past the physical definition of what you are or who your told you are, you can begin to question what your reality is, might it be seeing only lyric-less content or a full spectrum of possibility. | |
