Coal Chamber – Headstones and the Walking Dead Lyrics 15 years ago
If you know the history and really listen to the lyrics, I think that it's pretty obvious what the song is about. Yes the song was recorded during the Coal Chamber days, but the lyrics were added later by Dez. If you listen to the Coal Chamber albums...each album does get heavier. Both musically and in singing style. That was Dez's direction. The band wanted to go a little lighter, mix it up, some mild, some clean singing, and Dez wanted to stay heavy, and that was the "musical differences" that was responsible for the band's demise. Take a listen to Devildriver. It's all heavy, all fury, all speed, all metal, all of the time. So the song is about the band, the breakup, and the aftermath.
"I gave you the good, you gave me the bad."
Just how he put forth his best, and the didn't.
"Remember the house that rock 'n roll built where four people lived?
That house, it took it's toll
For some of you it was heartfelt... maybe heartfelt
For me, I sold my soul"
Similar thing. He gave it his all, wanted more, wanted harder, and they didn't. He did it because he wanted to, because he believed in it, and they did it for the money, the fame, for whatever...not for the music and the love of the music.
"You're all headstones, headstones now
I'm the one left - the walking dead"
Even the chorus. Saying they're all headstones as if they're dead. You don't hear anything from anyone else in that band. He's the last man standing a.k.a. "the walking dead"
It's just a great song. Just a big middle finger to the band who had so much potential and was heading in the right direction before they all wimped out. But Devildriver picked up where Coal Chamber left off and never looked back...and they are superior in every possible way.
