| Jack Johnson – You and Your Heart Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I think this song is about the thoughts and actions that separate us from other people, that create lines and divisions. Lyrics like "You blame everyone," "take your aim," and "change the frame" (of reference; misinterpreting others) refer to standing in judgment of others, being harsh or critical, as does the line "You cut the people passing by Because you know what you don't like." Drawing a line in the sand often means creating an artificial boundary and implying that crossing it will cause trouble - issuing ultimatums. Some people draw so many lines in the sand they metaphorically wear their fingernails away. Such behavior not only separates us from each other, but causes estrangement from our own heart, our ability to love. We can only hope the tide washes away the divisive and destructive lines that we've drawn. Great song. |
