Hot Chip – I Feel Better Lyrics 15 years ago
This song strikes me as a very intimate bedroom conversation, as well as perfect illustration of humanist values.

The protagonist's lover is distracted by thoughts of human fallibility. The protagonist responds: the question is meaningless in this moment of embrace. This often hostile world will end and us long before it. There will someday be no evidence humanity ever existed. Our hundreds of thousands of years of collective cruelty and our individual momentary snatches of bliss are equally significant to the universe, and to time, so let's make this particular moment seem an eternity.

I should point out that I don't mean a "prayer" in a particularly superstitious sense. I know nothing of the band members beliefs, though the lyrics of I Feel Better make a perfect case for Humanism.

I think the basic message is that happiness could be attainable for everyone if we could consistently regard it as a need rather than a want. This requires the wisdom to differentiate between the two, which makes this song, to me, a tragic prayer for a cause we know is lost.

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 15 years ago
When you consign a moment to videotape, as in a home movie, you are admitting, in a way, that this is one for the ages. Something representative. This song is a statement to that loved one that if, as in Faust, Mephistopheles were waiting in the wings to snatch one's soul away after declaring this to be the most perfect moment ever, it would be worth it, because it is. Death will take us all, forever, so never, ever be afraid to indulge in the majestic beauty of the moment, even on the fear of losing it forever; that will happen anyway. Spite the devil by reveling in the transient beauty and feeling it for all it's worth before it's gone.

Radiohead – Nude Lyrics 15 years ago
Thom has said this album is partly about "that anonymous fear thing, sitting in traffic, thinking, 'I'm sure I'm supposed to be doing something else" and "about the fucking panic of realising you're going to die! And that any time soon [I could] possibly [have] a heart attack when I next go for a run."

I almost agree with Xeans, in a way, though I think the point of the song is a little broader than pornography and masturbation, with the sexual connotations being representative of those instances in which people let pretense run their lives down a dead end. A person spending all their time and, ahem, energy, fantasizing and "painting" themselves "white", knows for a fact that they are not getting what they want and are, in fact, wasting their time and hindering real pursuit of the desire's object. This song alludes to that frustration; being unable to grasp it, because one's ideas/resultant actions have grown apart it. You never quite catch the thing itself, b/c you're perception is skewed, but then you're off again, reliving the same fruitless obsession in your own personal hell.
