| I think this song is about Jesus Christ and how his death was suicide. Since Jesus gave his life up to die for our sins, and he let himself die, because he could have stopped it at any moment, yet Jesus knew that He has to do it so that our sins would be forgiven. Serj looks at this as suicide, a self righteous one, because he is saying that Jesus let himself be killed and he did it thinking that he was right. I am a christian and I do not agree with anything Serj says, but this is a great song. The beginning part is talking about when Jesus died on the cross, He went to hell to bring back the Keys and conquer death, Serj is asking why He even had to do that. Why did Satan even have the keys in the first place? If Jesus is God, then why did he put the keys on the table, meaning why did he give Satan a chance to even have that power, and I think Serj is saying that he did it so he could look better and for it to be a better story, or fable as Serj calls it. The reference to him putting on makeup and hiding his scars is alluding to how he wants Jesus to stop looking so much like a martyr and to cover up all he suffered so that people will stop believing how much He actually suffered and focus more on how fabricated he thinks the story is. The ending part is obviously when Jesus was dying on the cross and how He cried out to God asking him why He has forsaken him. Because Jesus took on all the sins of man in order to be the ultimate sacrifice, God turned his back on him, because God cannot have any realtionship or communion with sin, and even though it was his only beloved son, he couldn't be with Him, because of all the sin Jesus had. This is the worst moment in Jesus life. His Father, God, forsakes Him, and Jesus dies on the cross a sinner and goes to hell, but at the same time this is the most glorious moment because He does the will of God and saves mankind from their sin. Serj is looking at all this from a different view point which is lacking a lot of truths. Serj talks alot about Jesus and how he thinks that Jesus is a fraud. Like I said, I am a christian and I believe in Jesus, and I believe that He died on the cross for our sins and that all that He did, He did it perfectly, but I can't deny how good this song is. The music is awesome and even though I don't agree at all with the lyrics, I like them because it makes you think and ponder The truth is out there, look for it and you will find it. | |

It seems as though Chino is talking about ¨God¨ or a higher being, a savior (Complex Priestess) that he has been seeking and found (I've chased your name I've sailed all through space To watch this), but he realizes that this being is not involved with us directly for some reason and if only ¨she¨ would only show herself to us (Come down Contact Reach us Go wild)and reveal her plans, strategies and the truth(Remove the veil) we would be immediately better and be cured of any spiritual afflictions and sickness of ideals and morals. But its almost as though he realizes that its not totally up to her to do everything, but that he´s the one that has to put in his part, he´s the one who´s ¨sick¨, and by being this he is also the (antidote), by choosing to follow her and be part of her (team) he can be healed. Its not that ¨God¨doesn´t want to be involved with us, but its that we aren´t involved with him. In the end of the song he decides to get involved and to go with her and have this experience (The rockets taking off tonight its time...take me...up), this ride, and rather then her showing herself to us, he is the one who is going to expose her and (I´ll light you up) light her up. Thats what it means to me. |

| It´s so true what you say about how Chino´s vocals smooth out Stephen´s heavy playing. Awesome mixture of music and vocals. | |

I agree with MrDillinger in that we can never fully interpret what the artist is trying to portray through their lyrics, but what is great about music and especially Deftones songs is that we can openly interpret what we think the song means, and what it means to us. Thats the beauty of music. I think TomIn703 has a very good theory about what the album means and what the theme is as a whole, but like MrDillinger stated, I also believe that this song is about two different entities, or people, having an influence on each other even when they are in seperate places because of how strong the ties they have are. Chi being in a comma can´t communicate with Chino but like Chino says that ¨Time will see us realign¨ meaning that in time they will be together again wether here on earth or in ¨heaven¨. He wants to be showered or cleansed, purified by this experience which he describes as diamonds, diamonds being something beautiful, strong, long lasting, like their friendship and love, and if you look at it from Chi´s perpective then he wants to take Chino, or whoever else it is he loves with him (I will take, you away, with me) to a place beyond and above this present world (Run away, outer space, with me). So if all is done right (Calculate, all embrace, hold on) they will see each other in ¨death¨, which could be a physical one or the death of things passed (When the coffin shakes And the needle breaks Come Run away with me, come on you'll see), and they will be together ¨Once and for all¨. |
