I think that Conor is really only saying one thing in this song. Imo it's not about free will versus determinism, it's about how both of them mesh together to make our lives. Our fates are determined already. Nothing is left up to chance, nothing is random, nothing happens by accident. Every second of the day is already planned out. Everything is inevitable, including death. The free will is how you choose to interpret this and whether or not you accept it. I think he's saying more that our thoughts and conclusions about fate are free will, not fate itself. Whether it's because of Science or some higher-being, what will happen will happen. You just have to choose whether or not to accept it. If you go off of this, he's also sort of saying that as long as you've chosen something to believe in, you're correct. Whether you want to believe in God or Shiva or Zeus, or maybe you've simply decided to devote your life to Science. It doesn't really matter what you choose, your fate is determined either way. That's just how it seems to me. I'd rather think that he meshed the two ideas instead of having two conflicting views in the song. I get that no one can know for sure whether or not fate has planned out our lives already, so it makes sense that he hasn't really come to terms with it in the song, but I don't see the point of him arguing both sides as conflicting ideas. I'd rather believe that he's saying they're both right in their own way. |

| I don't know if this has already been posted somewhere on here, not going to read through all 10 pages of comments, but "caste" is type of social class they have in India, maybe other countries too. So it fits with the other things in the lyric because they're all ways of putting people into groups. | |

This is really really old, sorry. But if I remember correctly, Aubergine Dreams was the name of some sort of makeup in the book Invisible Monsters. Like how lipstick can be named "Cherry Red" or "Kiss Me Pink" or something. And yeah, aubergine is French for eggplant, so it would be some shade of purple. |

| M.I.A. – 20 Dollar Lyrics | 15 years ago |

"Is those diamonds helpin' ya?" should be "Is gold, diamonds helpin' ya?" "So they're gonna use the shit just to get by" should be "So they're gonna use the shit just to get far" "Make it red so I look rawr, rawr, rawr" I think it should be raw, not rawr. "I was a little girl who made good with all what I blurt" For some reason I always heard it as "I was a little girl who made good, bid au revoir, adieu" (both meaning "goodbye") Anyway, I know that she's from Sri Lanka and had to live during a war there, so she's speaking from experience when she talks about war. It's a contrast to our cultures when she says that you can buy an AK in Africa for $20. Here $20 might be a family meal from a fast food place or a new shirt, when in Africa it's the difference between life and death. Aside from that I can't really make sense of the lyrics, but a great song nonetheless! |

There are a lot of references to Annabel Lee in this song, not just the one lyric where he specifically mentions that poem. The last stanza of Annabel Lee: "*For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams* Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; *And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes* Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride, In the *sepulchre* there by the sea, In her tomb by the *sounding sea*." Some lines from this song: "So that I will look beautiful in my silent sepulcher" "I heard truth like the sounding sea" "For the moon never shines, and the stars never rise without bringing me dreams haunted by the ghosts of those bright eyes" Annabel Lee is about a man who loves a woman, but then she gets sick and dies. Her body is placed in a sepulcher by the sea, which he lays down beside each night. He blames her death on their love, saying that even the angels in heaven were jealous, so they took her from him. In this song it's the man who gets sick and dies, and the love between the woman (Arienette) and him wasn't as strong. She ended up leaving him because, try as she might, she couldn't make him better, and she couldn't bear to see him suffer. In "The Joy in Forgetting/The Joy in Acceptance" he says "And you speak of a fever that burns you inside as you explain to your mother how you have wanted to die... And you will be happy the minute you try, so won't you try?" In this song he also speaks of a fever, so I'm thinking that maybe he wants to die, or at least sees it as inevitable, so he won't even try to get better. Arienette says that she'll never leave, but he claims to know that she will eventually. He thinks that her leaving him is an inevitability, just like his death. This mindset could be what drove her away, along with not wanting to see him suffer. But, like the man in Annabel Lee, he can't get over her after she leaves. He dreams of her every night and sees her all the time. He wants Jetsabel to get rid of her things because he can't stand to be reminded of her all the time, but it probably won't work. One thing I don't understand is when he says "like the lies I believed too easily." At first I thought it meant that he believed Arienette when she said that she'd never leave, but obviously not, since he says that he knows she will. I don't know what other lie he could be talking about, though. One more thing. "Just to freeze in my place by the rod iron gate" - That should be WROUGHT iron gate. ;] |

| Bright Eyes – Messenger Bird's Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I think he's saying that he can tell that his girlfriend is getting bored with him, and he thinks that she wants to break up, but he can't tell. He just wants her to say whether or not she wants to break up, he can't stand waiting and wondering. He would do whatever she wants, because he loves her, but he's sick of the game she's playing by pushing him away and pulling him in. He needs her to decide. | |
