I think at its core the song isn't even about race, its about the inevitable feeling in youthful love that only each other understand you fully. It's about being lost and not caring what the world thinks or knowing that the only real place you have to be understood is with that person. Also about wanting to ignore real hardships that are hard to ignore because you love someone but knowing deep down eventually they will take their toll whether you as a couple survive them or sepperate. Tho obviously the universal appeal of the song in everyone feeling like they don't fit in and being lost in love is wrapped in the more personal story of interracial love and a family that doesn't understand i think mostly the underlying meaning affects most people because to be honest most people I know haven't been in that exact situation and lost everything for someone they knew they likely still wouldn't have forever. But i think even people who haven't get the underneath story of "us against the world" which is what makes me love this song so much |

hmm i think its about creating a cycle of let downs, drugs or love not sure it matters. I'd say the point is you repeatedly put yourself in a position where you expect too much from people/drugs/the world and your problems just get worse and worse because you expect someone/something to save you from the things you cant or wont fix yourself in your life. I think that's it at the heart its a song about wanting other people/things to make you not have to be responsible for your own life and the issues in it |

hmm no one has said it but i don't think this song is really even self deprecating, to me it seems like it is really about kids repeating what a friend of a friend or someone they barely know told them as tho it were some sort of rock gospel. How many times have you heard the same dribble about some bands from people who really have no business at that bands show cuz they don't see anything except one hit song the band had. Its like when kid A) says a band sucks if he's cool enough kids B-Z just fucking agree and repeat his bullshit even if they've never seen them play idk that's my theory |
