Drowsy – Harmless Lyrics 14 years ago
So the king turns into dust
and the queen she kneels in tears
the prince runs away - it's too much for him to take
the knight standing by watching the fall of fair (family?) pride
this all proves your prophets false
and there's no light to save you

I wonder aside, watching your kingdom fall,
it's not my fight and I decide
to live
to wail (wait?)
I will have some peace

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 15 years ago
Alright here is how I interpreted it. It all started with the last stanza...I think it is about an older guy (a veteran) who is in the hospital...perhaps dying and slightly senile just rambling about people he loves and about a life gone by...this is kind of implied in Part I.
but first his daughter has something to say to him before he starts his rambling...

"Daddy, please, hear this song that I sing
In your heart there's a spark that just screams
For a lover to bring
A child to your chest that could lay as you sleep
And love all you have left like your boy used to be
Long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet"

Perhaps his daughter is telling him this when she visits him. (I think he might be going a bit senile). So maybe this is about the two-headed boy wishing he had a lover who could produce him a sweet innocent child like his son used to be that could cheer him up and be with him as he waits for death.

"Blister, please, with those wings in your spine
Love to be with a brother of mine
How he'd love to find
Your tongue in his teeth, in a struggle to find
Secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight
Sounding only at night as you sleep"

So two headed boy is asking the angel Blister (some girl who died) if he could be with his brother who loved her (Blister). Now perhaps he is confusing his visiting daughter with Blister (cause the daughter as mentioned in the first stanza is singing - two headed boy is mixing reality with his dreams).

"In my dreams you're alive and you're crying
As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet
Rings of flowers around your eyes and I'll love you
For the rest of your life"

Again two headed boy is talking about Blister - perhaps it was some kind of love triangle. Perhaps again he is mixing reality with his dreams "as your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet" - those are the tomatoes

"Brother, see, we are one and the same
And you left with your head filled with flames
And you watched as your brains
Fell out through your teeth, push the pieces in place
Make your smile sweet to see, don't you take this away
I'm still wanting my face on your cheek"

Now he is talking to that brother (who also loved Blister - but kinda just wanted to have sex with her, to find her secret songs). this brother died perhaps in the same war as two headed boy. He says we are one and the same - we both liked this girl and we were both in that war (or since Magnum said the album stemmed from an obsession with Anne Frank both guys were in the holocaust).

"And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place where some holy spectacle lies
And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life"

This is just a comment on death not really spoken by anyone. or perhaps break means breaking out of the concentration camps so long ago.

"Two headed boy, she is all you could need
She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires
And retire to sheets safe and clean
But don't hate her when she gets up to leave"

My favorite stanza of the whole song and of all songs I've ever heard in my life.
So this is what the singer (maybe Death) says to two headed boy that all he needs is this nurse (that perhaps he mistakes as Blister), feeding him his hospital food, and plugging him up to his IVs and heart monitor (cause he's in a hospital)
but the singer (Death) says not to hate the nurse when she goes home to her own life (sheets safe and clean)...maybe the nurse is actually his daughter taking care of him although I don't know if that is ethical.

So this is my own personal interpretation and I don't claim this to be the meaning of the song as I did not write it. Comments are welcome!

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is referring back to Faust Arp. Why do I think this?
Well Mephistopheles is another name for the devil. Faust made a deal with him saying he could take his soul if he ever admitted that he has had the most fulfilling/perfect moment of his life - he is satisfied completely in knowledge and happiness.

The last lines of the song are:
"Today has been the most perfect day I have ever seen"
By admitting he is completely satisfied in happiness he has ended the term of the agreement so Mephisto comes to grab him.

This can be interpreted as a suicide note because by saying it is the most perfect day (voiding the deal with the devil) he is knowingly bringing about his own death.
In the end he is saved by God's grace which explains the pearly gates part.

This is pure speculation but it seems to fit.

I don't think this is really about Faust just a version of him - perhaps Thom Yorke.

Coldplay – Politik Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree that other people are suffering in other countries and that seems like a bigger tragedy but 9/11 is such a big deal because it was out of the blue. It was an unexpected and crippling blow. It was like Pearl Harbor all over again. When people die suddenly it seems like much more of a tragedy then people slowly dying because it is unexpected. When someone has been dying for the past month you have a chance to say goodbye but no one got to say goodbye with 9/11.

Now what makes me angry is when people like you cry about how there is so much suffering in the world blah blah blah. America is not superman; we can't fly around saving the world. Even now there are so many organizations "making a difference" in other countries but I don't see the difference. These organizations are constantly saying "help us help others". How many freaking wells do we have to build before these African kids are no longer thirsty? How many more bags of rice do we have to send? There is a deeper problem here and I don't think the answer lies in more American volunteers - we're not the only developed nation. It seems America is doing a hell of a lot more than other nations but that is beside the point. The point is, America isn't a superhero (9/11 didn't bounce off a steel chest but buried deep in vulnerable flesh). These countries need to want to help themselves long after the volunteers are gone. America is not a crutch.

The National – Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks Lyrics 15 years ago
So I found a nice little blurb about what Vanderlyle actually means:

The song title is typical of the made-up names the National give to many of their songs. Frontman Matt Berninger told The Quietus: "Inventing, yeah. Like 'Squalor Victoria' — there's something in that word that sounds like something because every time you actually try to use real words to describe it, it doesn't sound like the thing you're talking about anyway. This character, Vanderlyle Crybaby — I can't tell you how long it took me to come up with the word 'Vanderlyle.' There's the Nirvana song, 'Pennyroyal Tea' — just the word 'pennyroyal' I loved, it sounded so great and it's just the name of a tea. I couldn't use that — maybe I should have, that would have saved some time — and so I started looking at the rhythm of the word, and the cadence. I probably have a book of a hundred different three syllable things."

Also a little blurb about the addition of geek to the song title:

Berninger explained to The Quietus why he added the word "geeks" to the title: "Well it was always in the song, but the truth is, the reason I added it to the title was because a lot of people thought that I was saying 'geese' — people thought it was a reference to 'The Geese Of Beverly Road,' that the geese were back! In some ways that could have been cool, but that's not what it is. There was a time when we were mixing it where I kind of slur those lyrics a bit, and it sounds like I'm saying 'geese'. I asked Peter if I could re-record that one word, and he said no, it sounded fine, and it'd sound weird if there was suddenly this really pronounced 'GEEKS!' So I asked him to turn up the 'K' sound, just ride it up."

Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...The song matches the storyline of the film exactly not to mention the music video is pretty much a tip of the hat.
ok so music to movie translation time (Possible Spoiler Alert!!):

God, that was strange to see you again
--they meet on a bus
Introduced by a friend of a friend
--Jim Carrey character (Joel) was introduced to Kate Winslet character (Clementine) by a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
--they talk on the bus and there is a feeling of recognition
In that instant it started to pour
--ok well taken literally this does not happen

Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of that time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name
--Joel's memory was erased so he can't remember Clementine and she can't remember him

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
--the "scar" is where the memories were, now they're gone leaving behind a scar
You tried to reach deep but you never got in
--Joel tried to make a connection with her but never could
And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
--outside her as in Joel sees her as a stranger when she used to be his lover - he can now see what it was he loved about her
Repent all your sin

Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
--this is pretty obvious but he losses the memories of Clementine (a face)
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
--Clementine put all of herself into the relationship-told Joel her secrets - he kept his distance
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
--referring to the postcard the company sends on behalf of Clementine saying memories of him have been erased
From the house down the road from real love
--referring to the house Clementine wants to live in and shown near the end of the film
Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back
--pretty obvious the meaning here
There's one thing I have to say so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
--this is the point in the film where Joel and Clementine are talking in the library (in Joel's mind)...near the end
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
--this is like the part in the movie where the house is destroyed by the waves

I love Eternal Sunshine and love this song for having such a similar theme...
As for the title of the song: Your ex lover is dead...in the context of the film this could mean in a more figurative way as in your ex lover does not remember you and you don't remember her so she might as well be dead...the person Joel meets on the bus is someone new...someone he does not loathe as in the end of the relationship but someone he adores like the girl he was introduced to by a friend of a friend.
