I`ve heard this song now for about thousand times and until today I could never figure out, what it should mean, especially for myself, but now I have. I always thought "what is she singing about?" and now I believe it´s about living your life and wasting it thinking, controlling, watching. I also thought she was quite mean to the person in the strophes, but I guess it´s not necessarily meant mean. It could also be something like an appeal or just showing the way she is sick of hearing what she is supposed to do and what is expected to do and what she has to do. The strophes describe the way people who control everything think. They want to be on the safe side and they for example "keep their enemies closer, so as to protect theirselves". Although you could say doesn´t it make you more happy to keep your friends closer, because they mean much more to you? And you don´t always have to protect yourself from everything, sadness and being hurt is a part of life, which comes and goes. But these people just think so much and try to have everything done right. And they give advice. In the chorus she just says live your life, do whatever you want to - as long as it´s real. So you don´t always have to control everything and to figure out everything and not always have to plan yourself, just live the life and do what you feel like, be whoever you want to, feel free to do this because as long as you´re honest and not acting like a reckless person, who doesn´t give a damn about everyone else, it´s right. It´s just you then with all the possibilities you have and all the different parts of you, that can only shine if you´re free to be whatever you want to :) That´s just what the song means to me now.. |

| I can´t figure out about what this song is for myself, but imagining it is about a relationship, I think the part with soulmates never die could mean that even if they are breaking up or even if there is far distance between them, they will always have a special connection, that´s why the other person shouldn´t be sad. "Soulmate dry your eyes, soulmates never die." | |

| to add something: I just thought the part with "just not too close, how close is close enough", could also show his problem he has with opening up himself to her. He´s scared because he thinks if he opens up, there are a lot of problems arizing with it: She could hurt him, he could have to change this part inside him which thinks it´s not good being with her, so he had to jump the fence he has made himself, the line between him and the world. He could also have to change a part in his life into something he is just not ready for. So to him it seems like giving up freedom or something. | |

I just think the song could be about wanting somebody, but thinking it wouldn´t fit somehow or thinking that there´s a part inside of him that can´t agree with it. He says "You've got this new head filled up with smoke and I've got my veins all tangled close" so I think they might just have had something, like for example had been dating a couple of times. When he´s talking about the safest place to hide with the jukebox, i think it could mean he or the other person is hiding behind parties or just behind smiling, so he/she wouldn´t think about her. Because he, for his share, knows if he would, he might want her again, which is not good for him, as he thinks. "And we lay, we lay together just not Too close, too close" might say that he knows there is something in the air, they like each other but he´s trying to get "not too close". If she would say I don´t want you, if she would leave him, it would be best for him because he wouldn´t have to fight against all this so he says: "just wanna break you down so badly while I trip over everything you say. I just wanna break you down so badly, in the worst way" . But deep inside he wants her so this is the end: "I'm gonna make damn sure that you can't ever leave. No, you won't ever get too far from me". Mixing up the part with hurting her and the part with making damn sure shows his confusion about the situation. Well that´s just my interpretation :) |
