Personally, I think the term "contra" can be interpreted as an agent against or in opposition of another person. The Nicaraguan rebel groups in the 1980s were specifically label Contras because of their position of a counter-revolution; they were against the revolution that was taking place in their country. Looking at the lyrics I think he is relaying to the listener that he thought he had a connection to a girl. This could be seen in the first stanza. Next, he then states that "even with an oath," which I'd imagine is saying "I love you," or "we'll be together forever," "she turned away from him," this could mean that she didn't reciprocate the same feelings or perhaps did, but no longer felt the way she did. From the other verses, it appears that he still loves her or at least has feelings, since she no longer feels this way, she would be a contra to him; she is the counter movement to his feeling of love. The lines "I think ur a contra \ And I think that you’ve lied \ Don’t call me a contra \ Till you’ve tried," can be interpreted as the fight between the two, when he calls her a "contra" and a liar, with her response being "don't call me a contra." The rest of the of song is him realizing that she never lied, she was just someone going through the motions of living life to the fullest. Perhaps she was young and just going through a fling with him, she just wanted to have fun, hang out with friends, and rock and roll. She was never really interested in a long lasting relationship and perhaps he was too involved with the relationship to see this, but when she pulls away he sees that she is "not a contra" because she never felt the same way as he did. Lastly, I think the part "Never pick sides \ never choose between two," is her advice to him. She wanted her freedom and fun and perhaps an open relationship so that she never had to pick between being with someone or doing whatever she wanted to do. His response was "I just wanted you," which sums up his feelings throughout the song. |
