From what I can tell, the stronger interpretation of the artist's intent is the one that describes his difficulty over the last 10 years with his career as a musician, his sister's circumstances with divorce, etc..., and his regret over the former band. However, a good work of art is one that can be interpreted many ways. I'm glad many see this as an anti-war song. We NEED anti-war songs. I mean, damn! we got into these wars right after I graduated high school and we're still in them!?!?!? Artists SHOULD be saying WTF!?!? Quite frankly, the younger generations would probably not take to the unsubtle, in-your-face type anti-war songs of the 60s & 70s. So I prefer this as an anti-war song, although I can see it may not have been intended as such. Still, you have to wonder if Nate Ruess purposely put some double meanings in it, or if the producers of the song & video wanted to put some anti-war slant into it. |

| Coldplay – Paradise Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Is it just me or do a lot of music lyrics lately seem to have these themes of listlessness, disenchantment, desire for something better? Especially the music that millenials listen to? I was listening to Arcade Fire's latest album and it seemed to have a lot of these themes, as does this song. For one, I'm impressed about how Coldplay has updated their sound. As for the song, I would say the themes above apply. I grew up with Coldplay, their first album came out when I was in high school. Now it's 11 years later. Like the girl in the song, I think a lot of us expected "the world" - we expected, and everyone told us we *should* expect, to be as successful as we desired. You get into the world, the "bullets catch in your teeth" - you take some hits, but keep going, but you realize things aren't going to be what you thought or what everyone promised. "Life goes on, it gets so heavy" - you continue and endure, but eventually the "wheel breaks the butterfly" I know exactly how this feels. Eventually you realize the bulls*** that everyone fed you your whole life and it's heartbreaking. And then you want to just escape it all and go to "paradise" whereever you can find it. |

| Taio Cruz – Break Your Heart Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Yeah, Taio Cruz singles tend to be really repetitive, but catchy. | |

This is actually a pretty smart commentary on recent events and the disappointment and frustration with Bush followed by Obama: The lines about Fema and then the reference to playing basketball with Obama and his better etiquette followed by "toss a couple milli in the air just for the heck of it" and keeping the different denominations of money separate - a reference to the stimulus that didn't seem to have a coherent focus and giving big money to some (banks) and peanuts to everyone else. But when he talks about what HE would do, it's totally different. 1) he would visit where Katrina hit and actually help the people. He would take his money and adopt kids that don't have shit, fulfill someone's last wish, divide it up among his friends, and make sure no one goes hungry - exactly what people DON'T do when they have money but what they should do. In other words, focus on people and not himself. He's pointing out hypocrisy with the self-absorption of the chorus, which is about putting himself in the limelight. |
