Ahhh, the first comment to the first tack on the new record. Great one too, right up there with Lost Horizons. Long time fan of the Gin and it's amazing to see a true band hold true to their roots and style with complete last of regard for the "mainstream" which, in my personal opinion, is watered down with artist bashing artist, children superstars who sing about relationships while fighting pre-puberty and pop icons sent to jail. It refreshing to know that a group like the Gin Blossoms can be counted on for a style, sound and altogether dynamic that will endure for years after Hey Jealousy. |

My take, as I'm sure it's been done before but haven't read through all the comments, is that Johnny is in somewhat of an argument - with himself. I get to that because the "All I wanted" (which is throughout the whole song), to me anyway, is like a response to the previous line, an excuse almost. He wanted things he didn't need and chase things that would set him free, the life he chose IS hard, but he chose it and at some point in time, it got so hard and "luck ran out" (maybe the consequences of being simply who he is) It's an "internal" song, mixed with what he is thinking of saying to someone. A point form journey as HE looking for sympathy from someone but finds it very very "strange" considering his life and how successful he has been (who can relate to Johnny?) The rest of the song would follow with that form. Probably way way off from what he intended, but hence the beauty of music and what it can do to someone. |

I asked Jesse a while back if there was ever a palm read and he said no. they'd walk by all the time after/before band practice and thought it's be funny to get their palm read and write a song about it. So they did. |

- he told me that it meant nothing...just a line that fit, there's not sig. behind it. He also said "What does it mean to you Kev?"

Mike is writing about his band. This CD was released just before the band broke up and i'm sure it's about his issue with drinking and the relationship with the band. He's saying to his band members to not give up on the band and/or him. If it's looked at from that perspective, the entire song makes more sense.
