'I just held on and hoped you'd find that nowhere else you'd find my kind' - I think that this relates to her being in love with a man who she was terrified of losing to someone else. She had insecurities, but she hoped that he'd see something in her that would glow brighter than what everyone else had. 'I did all I could to make it be like the wallflower who never could' - I'm not really sure on this, but I always pictured it as her making an extra effort to be pretty and noticed around him, though always felt as though her efforts failed - maybe his eyes would get drawn to someone else instead. 'I admit I wasn't pure, when I tried so hard to make you see, life without you is not a cure.' - She told her lover that him going away wouldn't make her happy. The fact that she wasn't pure about it suggests that she may have been trying to make him feel guilty, just so that he wouldn't leave her. 'My unsung hero lies beneath the rooftops made of gold. He's telling me I should jump, he'll be there when I fall' - This is kinda ambigious. It could be another man who has been interested in her for a while, and really cares about her. He wants her to 'jump' - or get away from her current relationship, and when she does, he'll be there for her. 'So I step back, pretend I'm shocked, but really I always knew that this would happen to me and you.' - She's feigning disbelief that her lover doesn't care about her or want her as much as she wished. She knew it all along, but didn't want to uncover it, but here's her 'unsung hero' saying it to her clearly, and giving her the option of escape. I dunno, though. I've only speculated a little on the second verse. |

I'm surprised there are no comments for this song yet. I believe the meaning of this song involves a betrayal within a relationship, which she is now finally coming to terms with. 'You'll forget who fixed you in a little while'. She probably felt bitter that her lover had already forgotten about her, and begun to see someone else. Maybe she felt that she 'fixed' him due to some problem he had that she helped him get rid of, or maybe it was that he slept around a lot, and once she was with him she was sure she'd fixed that, and they'd grow old together happily. Maybe it's the realisation that he's forgetting about her that helps her feel like she's getting over him - but then of course, it could be denial, as the song sounds very emotionally painful. If she made herself say that she's taking back the love, then it's not coming easily. |

I love this song. I listened to it a lot after a break-up. Funny how you always want to listen to the sad songs that relate to you most, then they stick with you forever, always connected to that moment in time. It may just be me, but the second verse strikes me as her being somewhat bitter about the man who has fallen out of love with her. 'Was I too giving?' She probably sees this as a personal quality that she has, and wonders why, if she gave so much, she never got what she wanted in return. Yet, despite him falling out of love with her for reasons she can't understand, it's too difficult for her to be angry. Instead she'll just keep waiting for him. |
