| Ryan Adams – Magnolia Mountain Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Probably waaay too literal of an interpretation, but there's a place in NC called Mountain Magnolia Inn. Maybe reversed it cause it sounds better? "They got a room for you." There's a hot springs (rocks and riverbed references) and it was built in 1868, just after the civil war. "We burned the cotton fields down in the valley / And ended up with nothing but scars / The scars became lessons / that we gave to our children / After the war." Who knows with Adams? He is brilliant but has a lot of obscure references, but you don't have to understand all the lyrics to enjoy the songs because he is talented. | |

"You can hide `neath your covers and study your pain Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain" It's just my opinion, but I think this girl Mary may have lost someone and these lines are more than just saying she's turned away other guys. These lines seem more to have something to do with grief, "crosses from your lovers" being grave markers, "throw roses in the rain" possibly depicting a funeral scene. In the very least, she's had her heart broken somehow. I think this song really parallels Roy Orbison's "Only the Lonely" ("Roy Orbison's singing for the lonely"): "Only the lonely / Know the way I feel tonight / Only the lonely /Know this feeling ain't right /There goes my heart / They've gone forever / So far apart / But only the lonely know why I cry / Only the lonely // Only the lonely / Know the heartaches I've been through / Only the lonely / Know I cry and cry for you / Maybe tomorrow / A new romance / No more sorrow / But that's the chance / You've got to take if you're lonely / Heartbreak / Only the lonely" |
