| AFI – The Prayer Position Lyrics

Davey never liked talking about the meanings to his lyrics, but I found this in a year 2000 interview with Davey:
Q: I'm really curious about this line from 'Prayer Position': "From nature we must stray, to clarity we'll climb." What's the meaning behind it? Is it mocking people who feel that way?
D: No, it's not mocking. I think a lot of people excuse a lot of their actions through nature. "Well, we're human. It's natural for us to do this."
Q: Yeah. "It's 'natural' to objectify each other" and so on.
D: Yeah. On so many different levels. Exactly. To objectify each other... "To err, is to be human." Right? Well that's an excuse. Nature is an excuse for people. I could go on at length forever. But it's just an excuse, that's what it is. We are animals, we are human, but I believe as human beings we can achieve something higher than what animals can perceive. |

Agreed with all those that said this is about religion basically, a little about government use of religion. But let's not be so kind as to say MTB is against "organized religion" and "religion being used by those in power to control the masses." They obviously ARE saying those things, but they are going so far as to say (in those first two paragraphs of the song) that prayers and worship are useless because there isn't a deity to listen. I LOVE that MTB had the guts to say that. If they are atheist/agnostic I might gain even more respect for them. |

First I'll admit that since Emery is a Christian band, this song probably does look from a Christian viewpoint. But I think you could also switch the song to be totally opposite, coming from an atheistic standpoint. Being sung from the viewpoint of someone who is atheist talking to someone they are with who believes. Trying to present the facts and getting shoved away. Not wanting to live a lie believing in something that doesn't exist, it's a gamble anyway. |

| Emery – What Makes a Man a Man Lyrics

I partly agree with several of the comments already left. I think he's stuck, he's trying to appreciate someone who he can't. But also escaping by having meaningless flings. None of it means much to him anymore though he wishes it did. To say "take a look and see what makes a man a man" is, I think, a little sarcastic, kind of saying "i'm no man, i'm just a coward." |

i love paramore, and i like the tune of this song and stuff, in fact i love to sing it outloud, but it sucks that it's so obviously a worship song. i cannot relate to it in any way. i guess you could try to interpret it a different way, but it's a little difficult. |

| Poison the Well – Parks And What You Meant To Me Lyrics

the song obviously is about sex somewhat... possibly reconnecting (in more ways than one) with an old flame or a past fling that just didn't work out the first time but now he wants them to work and wants to leave with them to start anew.
i get the impression they might be a manipulative person ('intoxicate me with your many voices') or shady/flaky. could be the reason they didn't work out in the first place? he might fear they are going to run away from him again or avoid him ('lock your doors and close your shades, i'll never find') either way, doesn't sound like he cares too much.
i can relate to this song (or my interpretation)... restarting a relationship that was always doomed just because you adore that person so much. |

"we want the airwaves back" ---> direct reference to song "liberation frequency" by Refused which is also a great song. |

if you are at all familiar with AFI's other works, you would know this is not about God "saving" people or "washing away the nonbelievers" because Davey is a nonbeliever himself... just listen to The Great Disappointment, there are hints in other songs as well |

it's hard to explain how i feel about this song... but i almost feel like it's my anthem now. i know it is probably not the RIGHT interpretation of the song but i find comfort in my interpretation.
for me it's about finding someone, maybe my equal, who sees the darkness in life. they also share my realization that all good things must end. but in this realization we are able to comfort each other in our darkness. we know there is good in each other but we relate in our pessimism. depressing i know but it's still soothing to me. |

i think it is obvious that this is about a fling that turned into something more serious... it almost sounds like something that would happen on a spring break with the clubs/hotel, also the bible in the drawer, which most hotels have. he didn't use his common sense and jumped into this. |

I think its definitely about someone that has died but has not gone to heaven or hell, they are stuck here on earth as a ghost or whatnot... they have been stuck like this for a long time and just want to be released into the afterlife. |

I, in the past year have had two of my close friends die and I'm only 16. This song reminds me of them, kind of like they are going to heaven... all the people watching and cheering are the lives that they have touched. After these friends of mine had died, it really put things into perspective... therefore, "stepping into a new world"... maybe. At least that's what the song means to me. |

I think of this as he loves someone a lot but they hurt him regardless... not necessarily talking about bf/gf love but could also be about a relative or someone else... also I think it's describing how he finally hung himself and the person finds him, hanging, and the sight disturbs them and they run.. but all at the same time he's describing how their relationship was and what it was like..
incredible song. |

I definitely think it's about vampires... I listened to this song immediately after reading the book "Salem's Lot" and I was convinced... I kind of think of it as Davey singing as though he's the lead vampire.. the "queen bee"
"Bloody invitation" "Sinking into soft skin" "Ingest rejuvination"
"demanded invitation" Vampires need an invitation into your home before they can enter or come near you... usually involves them telling you to let them in. |

to me this song is about the high school years, and the people that put everyone down in school, stuff like that. the rich kids who don't have any idea what need is. |
