Yes he was on drugs! Of course he was on drugs! How many artists in the seventies and onward weren't on drugs? But that doesn't mean his songs aren't really profound! As Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie performed all kinds of songs like this that have absolutely no meaning until you listen to them a second time. Then you're just like, "Oh! I see what he did there! This is some really deep stuff!"

I really think you're onto something here!

I personally thought Bowie was referring to the Sailors themselves as cavemen, viewing such simple-minded violence as very much like two cavemen fighting over something trivial. I agree with everything else the both of you have said though.

Adding to that however...

"It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling, "No!"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen"

I always thought it sounded like the girl wanted to go on a date with some boy and her mom didn't want her to, then she got stood up for her movie date. I dunno... sounded better in my head.

David Bowie – Sell Me a Coat Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with davidbowiefan1. It makes a lot more sense than just brushing off a girl's death because it was a little fling. I mean really ThornBirds! If you're attatched to a person in any way, no matter if it was just a fling or not, could you seriously conscienciously just forget about them when they died suddenly? Are you for real?

David Bowie – It Ain't Easy Lyrics 14 years ago
At the risk of being seen as an ignorant fool, does anyone else think this song sounds kind of country? Well, not entirely country, maybe bluegrass or some other spinoff that's incredibly similar? It kind of gives me a kinda country/gospel vibe, especially at the chorus.

David Bowie – I'm Afraid of Americans Lyrics 14 years ago
And as to the "American God" thing, it's also kind of true. If you think about the history of the place where Jesus was actually alive, he would have been more like a Saudi Arabian than a white European. But can you imagine if, 'Heaven Forbid,' a person painted a portrait of Jesus, depicting him as he really would probably have looked, and an American saw it? I mean, all-freaking-hell would break loose! It's all because we've brainwashed ourselves into thinking that we're right, but we're actually (as a whole, not neccessarily me personally or any individual) all racist jerks and crybabies who can't handle things we don't understand.

I agree completely! We Americans have all been brainwashed and become stupid with it all! It's sickening and just plain sad. And our government aren't the only ones doing it to us, the bad thing is, most of us are doing it to ourselves and our children!

David Bowie – Space Oddity Lyrics 14 years ago
Actually, if you read Marc Spitz's "Bowie," it seems to be more about David's breakup with Hermione Farthingale. He was completely enamoured with her, but he slept around (with guys and girls) while they were together and didn't really listen when she said she didn't like it. When she left him, he was devastated and felt like he was lost in space. There was a movie released shortly before the song was written... I believe it was "Space Oddessy" or something like that. The record producers used that as a marketing tool to release the song, though it still wasn't considered much of a hit at the time.

David Bowie – Eight Line Poem Lyrics 15 years ago
Not a haiku. A haiku is a three line poem with lines of 5-7-5 syllables. Don't know what you were talking about there mca5517a, but I do otherwise agree with you. This song is deep and meaningful, but it's also one wierd-ass poem that I still don't really get. Ah well, some of the greatest works of art you just aren't supposed to get. There just good anyway.

David Bowie – Fashion Lyrics 15 years ago
I really like this song.

It's mostly about how everyone tries to follow the crowd. By following trends, we sometimes lose our identities and become brainless zombies that just follow whatever the next big thing is. The video really adds a lot of sense to the song, it's wierd and kinda creepy, but it put things in perspective for me. All the people with the masks, and the ones who stood around with blank expressions, those were sort of what we become following others. We lose our individuality and our identities. And some cultures may look at our trends and fashion statements and think we're a bunch of freaks, the same way we do looking at their cultures.

That's my opinion on it.

David Bowie – Within You Lyrics 15 years ago
I think what it means isn't that he can't live in her memories, but that he can't keep trying to live up to her expectations without something in return. Throughout the movie he tries to do everything she expects of him, tries to do everything she wants to believe he'd do. But when he sings this song he's saying he can't live up to that anymore. It's too much. And she shows no appreciation for his efforts either. But he wants to be a part of her life, wants to keep her happy, wants to be part of her. It's one of those situations that's impossible, but he wants it anyway.
