"There's nothing that can't be turned around" (line 4) One of Plato's characters, Aristophanes, in "The Symposium" explains how androgyny relates to love which is what this song is about. In the beginning everyone had two sets of all body parts, Zeus chopped humans in half because he was angry with us, then he came back and moved our genitals around so we could have sex while we embraced (he pitied us because we were dying of hunger and inactivity from not wanting to release our embrace on our other half). "Nobody wants to feel alone And everybody wants to love someone" (lines 5-6) After we were cut in half we went looking for our other half because we originally had that someone to make us whole. "You free your mind in your androgyny" (line 11) Aristophanes applauds male-male relationships between men and boys since such couples value boldness, braveness, and masculinity both in themselves and in others. "They're getting harder" (line 13) The reason for Pederasty (a usually erotic relationship between an older man and an adolescent boy) was to educate, protect, and provide a role model for the younger boy, so "they're getting harder" is like the young boys learning to grow a thicker skin and not be as easily hurt by the world. "Don't let a soulmate pass you by" (line 26) This one is easy, it refers to the androgynous person always searching for their other half (their soulmate). Plato. (c. 427-347 BC). The Symposium. | From First to Last – Emily Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Okay so he's in jail and she is writing him letters because they are pen pals. "the only thing that i've been waiting for" is talking about waiting to have sex with her. He hasn't had sex in a while...with a woman. "days seem like years in this month of December, the winter coldens me for i have yet to sleep, and never will i give up trying because you're everything to me"-this means he is trying to get out on good behavior and if he behaves well enough, he will get out when the winter is over. It seems like it is taking forever because he isn't used to behaving well. | |
| The Decemberists – Everything I Try to Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Is it a stretch to say this is about more than one lady? I believe that the first half is about this girl that he had been seeing for a while, but they both knew it wasn't really going anywhere. She must not handle confrontation very well because she gives him that card instead of just telling him she doesn't want to see him anymore. The next part is a completely different girl...his next relationship. While the first relationship was quite platonic, this one was more sexual and they didn't have real feelings for each other. Again, they both knew it wasn't going to work out and decided to go their separate ways. In both instances, the narrator blames himself for messing up the relationships. He makes himself believe that if he had done something differently they could have lasted. His attitude with his love life transcends into his every day life so he says "Everything I try to do, nothing seems to turn out right." I love the way he says the last line...it just sounds so pitiful, like he's lost all hope. Very convincing. |

Colin Meloy and The Decemberists are a bit peculiar and aren't always accepted with open arms, so I think the line "I was meant for derision" is very appropriate. Derision, in case you don't know, means mockery or scorn. Colin knows that not everyone understands where he is coming from all the time and they will judge and even ridicule him. I've always thought that this song was about Colin - as if he was the narrator. Huge fan...love the man...love the song. :) |
