Fiona Apple – To Your Love Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think this is a song about an ex-boyfriend. The lyrics very clearly indicate her relationship with the media, right from the opening verse: "Here's another speech you wish I'd swallow.(i.e. Mtv music awards speech..) Another cue for you to fold your ears.(ie.not listen to the real message of her songs) Another train of thought too hard to follow.(ie. ADD generation produced by MTV did not like what she had to say in her speech) Chuggin' along to the song that belongs to the shifting of gears."(ie. enjoying songs that have as much human emotion in them as the mechanical machines that produce them..like Lady Gaga these days for instance..)

I feel like this is about her infamous MTV award acceptance speech, and the following down slide her mainstream career as an artist took as a result. Because she had something to say, she got shot down, all the while artists like Christina Aguilera get to keep making music. But, again, this is just the vibe I get from the song. The theme of 'love' in songs is not always intended to be interpreted as relationships between individual human beings, but instead maybe love here represents the collective love she receives from fans and mainstream audiences alike. :)

Sleater-Kinney – Heart Factory Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think this song is necessarily about the media's portrayal of love and relationships, which is often very very false. Instead, I get the feeling that this song is about how many people these days are very cold and calculated, especially with relationships. Even now, with recent technologies like cell phones, facebook, etc. that are at our finger tips every day, it is very hard to tell how people truly feel these days. This could be explained with the following lyric: "Heart with an on/off switch and a remote control. Now you can program how you feel before you walk out the door." Plus, the techno logic imagery just screams out the theme of transhumanism (i.e. humans are not good enough naturally, we must improve them with technology...that kind of nonsence.)
Overall, I feel that this song is about criticizing modern day relationships + people.

M.I.A. – Space Lyrics 15 years ago
I get the feeling that this song is about the feeling of peacefulness that a person can attain from disconnecting themselves from modern technology. (My lines are down, you can't cal me) It describes a feeling of bliss due to not being totally available at all times, like many of us do these days with the inventions of things like Facebook and cell phones. Basically it suggests that we'd all be much happier if we were all actually in charge of our own destinies and lives.
