Okay, Eminem introduces the song by saying: a) "I can't tell you what it really is I can only tell you what it feels like" I think it's a 'gut' feeling Eminem is introducing here, of course this phrase will relate to subsequent lyrics. b) "And right now there's a steel knife in my windpipe I can't breathe, but I still fight while I can fight" Though indirect, it does relate to the first phrase. Not only is he suggesting a 'gut' feeling, but he is obviously inhibited in one way or another - anger would be the most probable scenario. He is foreshadowing the fact that he will not give up (no matter what). c) "As long as the wrong feels right it's like I'm in flight" Again, further proving he will not give up - even if what he is doing is wrong, he forces himself to believe its right, and if he does that, he's fine with doing it. d) "High off of love, drunk from her hate" There can be two different meanings to this phrase. If taken literally, this is an excuse as to why he abuses alcohol and drugs. However, it may not be about substances at all, he may be referring to his behavior. Perhaps she is the reason (or at least what he thinks is the reason) for his bad temper and his life problems. e) “It's like I'm huffing paint and I love it the more that I suffer I suffocate and right before I'm about to drown she resuscitates me she fucking hates me and I love it” Okay this part is fairly confusing, however, I think he purposely wrote it this way. The whole purpose of this phrase is to identify that it is a confusing relationship. He’s mentioning that he’s hurting emotionally, but right before he hits his low, she makes him feel great, and the sentence ends with a double negative. The whole sentence is: Hate, Love, Hate, Love, Hate, Love. f) “Wait, where you going I'm leaving you No you ain't, come back We're running right back Here we go again It's so insane” This is an example of a pretty basic routine they have: She tries to leave, he says no. Push the repeat button. g) “'cause when it's going good, it's going great I'm Superman with the wind in his back She's Lois Lane” When the relationship is going good, it’s perfect. He even relates to Superman and Lois Lane. I think he didn’t pick any random ‘true love’ couple here. He didn’t just mention the couple, he also mentioned the ‘wind in his back’ (flying). This could suggest the fact that he has the power and/or control in the relationship. h) “But when it's bad, it's awful I feel so ashamed I snapped Who's that dude I don't even know his name I laid hands on her I'll never stoop so low again I guess I don't know my own strength” This part is important. Basically, he got angry at something she did (although he mentions another man, it could be more subtle. I think he just used this as a blind example). He says that he physically abused her while angry, told her he was sorry and he won’t do it again. Also told her it was an accident saying ‘I don’t know my own strength’. |
