I wrote a fairly lengthy blog post about this track - mostly related to the overall superb programming. However I also interpreted the lyrics in a rather interesting way. Here's the excerpt of my interpretation: Alison is known for using animals to provide additional imagery in her lyrics - sometimes as proxies for individuals with specific characteristics. She references horses often in a variety of contexts and uses equine imagery in live performances via costumes. In this instance, due to the overall brooding and relentless nature of “Ocean”, I can’t help but think of the Nazgûl - colloquially referred to as ‘Ringwraiths’, ‘Dark Riders’ or ‘the Nine’ - from J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium. There’s nothing else here that suggests Tolkien influence whatsoever, so it’s probably just me taking a few leaps. However, given this interpretation, one could continue making connections when these lyrics are viewed from the perspective of Samwise and his relationship with Frodo during their journey through The Lord of the Rings. In which case, despite Samwise’s overall emotional strength, nearly every line would pertain to his plight and relationship with Frodo. |

Hmmm. I'm a huge fan of this site and I love lurking and contributing where I can... But I submitted theses lyrics, and I'm disappointed to see that my submission has been replaced with a verbatim copy of the lyrics on Musixmatch/LyricFind, which (as I hear them) are inaccurate. I understand lyrics are © and laws trump everything, but what I hear differs from what appears above. I submitted my interpretation of the lyrics. I use Spotify, so I don't get liner notes. Maybe the official™ lyrics are out there and I just don't know about them? (I know Spotify is integrated with Musixmatch -- but Musixmatch takes submissions from its community, which I am also a part of, and are also often inaccurate. To boot, their integration has been down for weeks now). I listened to this track dozens of times on headphones with the volume cranked and EQ doing its best to isolate the vocals, while typing out the verses. While I can't decipher everything (3D and Tricky singing over each other for example), I feel inclined to post my original submission below for community consideration. This may seem trite - and it's absolutely nothing against the mods (I believe I'm following all submission guidelines, if not please PM me) - I'm really just trying to contribute to the site, and (maybe) get some help deciphering the FULL lyrics (3D and Tricky singing together mostly) -- and to read what others have to say about this amazing track. Folks, if you can help fill the gaps, please do -- that's what it's all about :) I'm super-jazzed about this EP and their hopefully-inevitable forthcoming album, especially if Tricky is on more tracks. these lyrics are pretty close but there are some errors here, as i see (hear) it. it is definitely hard to get the correct lyrics just by listening to this track because martina's accent and vocal style. with that in mind, there's almost an entire verse - second to last one - that i cannot interpret. even watching so many live videos i have no idea what she is singing during that part. although if you listen closely you can tell that it's not really close to what is listed here.. ------- say what's on paper said it was my babel it was my babel tell all people now you know it's over rolling off her shoulder you can take a ladder to the shadows and forget was it how she kissed you and then dismissed you was it purposeful and was it just to hook you in hallucinating, chasing, changing, racing, breaking hating till you lost it all well you lost your girlfriend she was not knowing where you were going you are on your own he was quick to burning he was slow to learning though his eyes are misted he still kissed her when she cried and you did your best to please her you didn't up and leave her you befriended the harsh way it ended now sleep tight hallucinating, chasing, changing, pacing, bracing breaking a few walls at all ?? was that all you're doing ?? ?? ?? ?? you wanna be the one that shoots that truth i'm not dead i'm running so far out of my head the sprain of heart that ripples my day you can never sail by thinking away ------ this is just my interpretation.. and some of the words can be heard other waya, even i hear different words sometimes (like 'ripples' for instance). and yeah, that one verse is really hard to understand so if anyone else knows wtf she is saying i'd like to know for sure! |

yeah. everyone is pretty spot on in my opinion. fairly literal, as poett illustrates. not much else to say about the lyrics. my favorite part of this song however, is the guitars. i know, i know, but i'm a sucker for a good guitar sound. it's like 2:30 - 3:35, and yeah you have to turn it up - like you don't have it way up already... probably my favorite track off of the album even though i love everything on this album.. |

Yeah.. even for a cover this should have more comments. Cedric totally owns this song. Unfortunately the lyrics here are not right... By which I mean the song is shorter than this. There are 6 'verses' here, and in the version I have, the 3:04 iTunes bonus track, only verses 1,2,5 & 6 (going by the ones listed here) are present. Still, pretty killer. |

I've listened to this song so many times, but never really thought about it.. I also hear 'half-floors' and it plays into my interpretation of the song.. It's about half of a relationship. 'Why don't you close your eyes and reinvent me' 'Give me evenings and weekends' 'I could be yours' 'watch your name go by' 'let's make it quiet and quickly' He's got a physical relationship, encounters now and then, but not the whole thing. 'All these half-floors will lead to mine.' All this playing around will lead to him falling hard in love, bigger relationship, broken heart, etc.. There are some other errors to the lyrics, as I hear them: - 'We flew and strolled as two eliminated gently' sounds like 'illuminated gently' - 'will see to' sounds like 'or seem to' as in 'all these half-floors will lead to mine... or seem to' So, all these half-floors/physical relationships that aren't the real deal will lead to his floor->heart being broken [or whatever], or at least that's the way it seems... |

| I'm surprised there are so few comments on this track.. Stonie McStonesen is pretty much spot on, and this track has a nice beat as well. The lyrics pretty much speak for themselves so it's not like there's a lot of analysis needed to decipher the true 'meaning' - I guess that's why there's so few comments... | |

| This is a pretty short one, but whenever I listen I feel like there's a lot going on.. Mostly sad. A relationship that's falling apart.. He believes it's his fault. She's trying to find redeeming qualities or reassure him, but she knows it's over, and can't figure out how to tell him because he will be crushed. | |
