It's a song about the end of a relationship. He knows it's over. He knows she's going to break his heart, but he's holding on, hanging in there until she ends it, and he's possibly seen someone else who tends to follow the same relationship patterns he does and understands himself more. (seen it all through someone else) But at the end of it all, even though he's hurting, he is thankful for the time he had with her . He's been desecrated by the break up, but he was never in the wrong time or wrong place, that person was supposed to be in his life, even if for a moment, and so he can smile when it's all over. Partly because it's a familiar feeling, and we all find a little peace in familiarity, and partly because he can accept it as what it was, and partly because he's gone on an alcohol/drug binge to deal with the hurt.
Before you get your panties in a wad, I'm not saying the song is about drugs, but I AM saying that he makes references to using drugs to cope with the situation. ("a rolling blackout of oblivion" sounds like getting wasted to me) |

even at that....love IS a drug....definitely makes you high, and god does it hurt when you come down off that high....and once you feel that high you're hooked, and you go out looking for more, looking to get that fix....and in the same vein, sex is also a drug, and then combining love and sex is like a "speedball" (the combination of heroin and cocaine that killed the likes of Jim Belushi), and you're just asking for trouble... |

makes sense because I always thought of "Road Trippin" when I heard this song because of the mirror reference in both songs ("mirror for the sun" vs. "mirror to the moon")
This song is what happened when they reached their destination. Perhaps spiritually as well as physically. |

Wow. I never got all of that. but I think I'll add this. "a wedding batch of roses you threw across my floor" probably means they were getting married, and when she found out he cheated she threw the flowers that were intended for their wedding. |

It's about 2 people in love, and someone (presumably their parents) doesn't want them together and he's willing to "take a little dirt" to keep her. He's also saying that the person or persons trying to keep them apart clearly have never loved, never given their heart, because they don't understand the feeling he and his girlfriend share.
I used to do this as a cover when I was in a band, and dedicate it to my girlfriend, so in our case it's more about society not approving (as well as our families)because we're both chicks. Still a similar concept, just a slightly different direction. Obviously, I can totally relate to his point of view. I will take what I have to. When she looks at me with those beautiful, ice blue eyes, and tells me she loves me, nothing else matters.
And that's what it's all about. |

i agree that no tool song is ever about ONE thing
but I always think of it first and foremost as a love song. It is in fact my favorite love song. It's someone who has been desensitized and numbed by everything in society/the media and just can't feel ANYTHING any more, but he knows that he loves his partner, and if she/he loves him, she/he will sacrifice him/herself so that he can feel alive again. It's about loving someone so much that you would do anything, no matter how bad it hurts, it it's what they NEED "to breathe, to feel"
But in that there is also the social commentary on how ridiculous things are (much like in "vicarious" off of 2006's "10,000 days") because we are bombarded by images of sexuality and violence and sexualized violence and violent sexuality....he needs something more just to feel excited about it anymore

this may be unimportant, but it seems to me that it might be. Look at the pronouns...the intro "I know that YOU may love ME" and the Chorus "Don't call MY name" "I'M not YOUR babe" it seems that during these sections she is talking about herself, so why, in the verses, would she switch to "She" and "her" if she was still talking about herself? "She's got a halo around her finger, around you" implies that the halo around her finger somehow binds "her" to "you", a wedding or engagement ring might look a lot like a golden halo around someone's finger. I think that "you" is Alejandro. Alejandro is married. Lady Gaga ("I") is afraid of commitment, so she's been involved with men who are married in effort to avoid love, which is why after the sex act, she doesn't want to "kiss" or "touch" and tells him "just smoke your cigarette and hush" He has fallen in love with her, and that is why she says she can't be with him "like this anymore" because it's wrong. That's also why there's "nothing to lose" because he really belongs to someone else. And I think the reason that she calls him other names could be simply that it hurts to say his name, because she loves him, but she has to let him go. Or to make HIM think she doesn't really care because she can't even remember his name. His wife/girlfriend ("she") his innocent and young, and probably unaware of Alejandro's infidelity, and that is why he has to "cool the bad" and put out the flames of his affair before "she" gets burned. |
