"Hell's boiling over Heaven is full We're chained to the world" mmmmmmmmm.. so beautiful. Personally I find it more comforting to be dirt in the ground than an eternal life. Your soul, body and entire life getting scattered, lost in the ecosystem. Being chained to this world |

It's about him in a relationship and so focused on these new strong feelings so there is no room for the rest, the other person. "I held on tight and closed my eyes". Finally the moment of truth comes and he realizes how self absorb he has been and seeing the other person in a whole new light. The relationship is at it's ending point for it was clearly not a healthy one and he is left with these strong feelings, his own romantic wishes that really had nothing to do with her. (The nights are cold And I remember warmth I could have sworn I wasn't alone) - These feelings were false and were only about himself, not the other person. So he has realized he was alone in this relationship. Sadly not everybody that this happens to realizes this. |

I think that the song is about love and relationships being hopeless (for the protagonist) and how it is being lonely all of the time. It’s not about any breakup and that message, the title of the song, couple of parts of the song and the entire feel of the song, is an allegory. â€Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my headâ€ means that his world is falling apart, and I think that that fits very well to the rest of the song. He is speaking to his mother or he’s speaking to someone that is beyond him, like praying. The part: â€Sad veiled bride, please be happy handsome groom, give her room loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly although she needs you more than she loves youâ€ ..Is a story to back up his point. He’s not in love with any bride or she’s the bitch that dumped him. He is just taking an example of how relationships can be and very often are. â€..although she needs you more than she loves youâ€ is a very truthful line that takes part of any marriage sooner or later. The funny, clever, entertaining, good looking part is about self-hatred and the protagonist destroying himself. He now jumps from talking from I to you even though the song is still about the same person (it just sounds better, like he’s talking to himself now). â€..with your triumphs and your charms while they are in each other's arms" means that his triumphs and his charms can’t be enjoyed while he is in this destructive cycle. They are holding on tightly to him, he doesn’t notice or appreciate them. The rest of the song is a sequel to this and means basically the same things. It’s hard for him to love when he doesn’t love himself and in the â€love is natural and realâ€ part he creates this paradox both between his speech: like he is talking to himself as two people and as well as saying things like it’s hard for me to love, my love (which creates both more rhythm and a paradox) Having all that being said I think it’s great how the song sounds beautifully and romantic but really being very depressing as it’s about hopelessness, loneliness, self-hatred and self-destruction. I can really relate to this song on so many levels (at least how I interpret it) and it’s one of my favorites all though not being a real Smiths fan. |

I think that the song is about love and relationships being hopeless (for the protagonist), and how it is being lonely all of the time. It's not about any breakup, he might just be using that message as an allegory. The line "Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" I think is very hard to understand but it might mean that his world is falling apart. I'm not sure how the soil and the head has anything to do with that but this meaning makes sense with the rest of the song. He is speaking to his mother like speaking to someone thats beyond him, like praying to god. the part: "Sad veiled bride, please be happy handsome groom, give her room loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly although she needs you more than she loves you" ..Is just a story to back up his point. He's not in love with any bride or she's the bitch that dumped him or anything. He is just taking an example of how hopeless and unpleasant relationship can really be. Like "..although she needs you more than she loves you" is something that has a part in any marriage sooner or later and a really truthful line. The funny, clever, entertaining, good looking part is about self-hatred and the protagonist destroying himself. Now it's like he has jumped from talking from I to you, but still the story involves the same person (it just sounds better, like he's talking to himself). When he finally says: "with your triumphs and your charms while they are in each other's arms" means that all his triumphs and charms can't be enjoyed as he is in this destructive stage, he doesn't notice or appreciate them. Having that being said I love how he makes the song sound so beautifully like a love song but the meaning really being very depressing, about hopelessness, loneliness, self hatred and self destruction. I can really relate to this song on so many levels (at least how I interpret it) and it's one of my favorites, although not being a real Smiths fan. |
