Based off of the term "winter girl" I think that this song is about eating disorders, and the toll it's taken on a girl. "Wintergirls" is a book written by Laurie Halse Anderson about a girl with Anorexia. So when he sings, "you've become sick like this winter girl", I believe that is what he is referring to. "Well, I saw you fall back once, love" might mean that he's been with her through her ups and downs: recovery and relapse, and he cares too much to see her destroy herself over and over again. So, the line, "I can't stay, stay like this weather swirls" would mean, "I can't handle this anymore." Even though he wants to leave, he finds that he can't, "Two more days, just two more," and again with, "One more day, just one more." Then, the second verse, "Stay up late so you're sure, sure that I won't stray too far." The girl is afraid of him leaving her in the night, I know that's taking it quite bluntly, but that's my interpretation of that line. "Love is not for me, I promise," he is trying to convince himself that he doesn't really love her, so he can leave without feeling guilty. The chorus, I think, is the girl telling him that she isn't crazy like he thinks she is and all the good she has is in him. Finally the last lines of the song, "I'd stay if I ever could, stay if I ever could, and pick up your pieces babe, cause there's never a perfect day. I just lost my mind, but I still got you." I think he is saying to her, "I want to stay with you and help you put yourself back together again," and also, "I've lost my mind if I'm staying with you, but I love you." |
