I think simply this song is about being in love and hung up on someone that has moved on from you. That relationship once was a good thing but morphed into something that was no longer that and you hold on to that good portion, the "Ghost of a Good Thing". Meanwhile there is someone right there for you who is what love should be. Everything that you need, but you're too focused on the ghost of something that was good but no longer is. "As the real thing is getting away from you again" Simply put it's being caught up in old feelings of nostalgia making you miss the person who is everything you need right in front of you. |

Like many RA songs this has many meanings. Yes literally it can be seen as a love song between a man and a woman. But a lot of the lyrics elude to a certain type of relationship: the relationship between mankind, and mother nature. When you listen to the song imagine that Tim is singing to mother nature, and the entire song will make sense. This is a song of a relationship in which mankind wants to do good to mother nature, however, ultimately, it is in his natural to do the opposite. |
