I think that the meaning of this song is pretty straight-forward. Benjamin is explaining that he knows what it's like to get pretty low, but he wants to show us that we're not alone. He let's us know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how much we believe that we'll never find that light for ourselves, he assures us that we will. He found it, and so can we. At least that's what I got out of it. That's why I love Grieves. Most of his songs are positive, and I think he believes strongly in using his music to help other people. |

Agreed with epilepticteen. In my personal experience, I was listening to the album and reading the lyrics and I didn't notice anything "gay" about it until I read something that someone said about it maybe alluding to his "newfound gayness". And now all the lyrics kind of have wisps of it here and there, but I honestly think that's just because the idea was planted in my head and now I'm looking for it. Sure, the homosexuality might explain a few things about this album, but it's ridiculous to assume. There's no way to know unless he actually said it himself. |

I didn't take the time to read all the previous comments, but did anyone think to mention that maybe the whole "brother" thing could just be referenced to the belief in certain religions that all men are brothers? Meaning that everyone's family, in a sense. Sufjan is a religious guy, though it's somewhat harder to tell in this album. It could very well be an "outing", which might explain why this album is a lot less religious-based. Many religions do discriminate homosexuality. But it doesn't make sense with the lyrics above. As well as the fact that if this song was about his new-found homosexuality, he would probably not be calling this person a "brother" anyway. The person he's characterizing in the lyrics seems distinctly feminine to me, so that doesn't just match up in my book. My take on it is that he's been friends with this girl for a while and he's just now finding that he actually loves her, but he still thinks of her as family so it's a little weird for him. Sure, it might be a dude, but I still think it's a girl. |
