Frontman Gustav Wood says, “The song is about my feelings growing up without a father figure, how I was and am, very directly a son of apathy, and also how I feel that as a generation, we are very much lacking in positive role models to follow.” “With that in mind,” he continues, “the song is me trying to say that it doesn't have to be a negative experience. Instead of being lost, we are spared from any pre-determined direction or expectation, the lack of a father figure not being a burden, but rather a gift, an illustration of the kind of person to strive to be/not to be. Instead of being held back, we are set free. It sums up the overall feeling of the record for me, and actually contains the album’s title in it's first verse.” |

I was thinking this could be about his mom. Or any girl that he looks up to, and keeps him going. 'I carry my mistakes And she carries them too When all I see are bruises black She shows me the blue' This bit makes me think of domestic violence, but I don't think that this song is about this. This bit could also mean that when he makes mistakes he always sees the worst of them, but this girl, be it his mom, or his girlfriend or whoever shows him the 'blue' the kinda 'benefits' of his mistakes. 'I believe in her' He obviously looks up to and admires this person. 'When my ship has run its course She steers me back out to the sea' She keeps him on the right track, and keeps him going. 'She sees me as an eagle though I am just a crow She sees me as a diamond though Im just a weathered stone ' She always sees the better side of him, she thinks the world of him, like a mom does of their child. |
