I think it's a bad memory or a flashback that this guy (or possibly a girl) can't forget or forgive themselves for but they have suddenly come to terms with this .. 'All my nightmares escaped my head' 'Bar the door, please don't let them in' - *Maybe people came to evict them?* 'Now my head's splitting at the seams And I don't know if I can' - *struggling to come to terms with it all* But possibly there new lover helps them or reassures them 'Here, beneath my lungs, I feel your thumbs press into my skin again' - *They are coming back to life with the reassurance of their lover and the lover is pressing on their heart* ?? :).
