For me the meaning of this song is very literal... Jakob is referring to his childhood. He lives in an apartment where a homeless man dwells outside. He's an old man and apparently very musically gifted. I believe this is the "black line"... The gift of music they both share. The song shows Jakob's respect for this man, but he refers to this man as "alone" as if he never really approached him or got to know him.Perhaps the man on the street inspired him or maybe humbled him as a musician with Bob Dylan for a father. (not to ignore the lineage from which Jakob comes!) Then, one day the man is gone... His things are still at the place where Jakob had always seen him. Jakob's "heartache"... The best he can do is cross his little fingers, and wish a shooting star that the man is ok, but just "moved on", but Jakob knows where he went... It's a beautiful tribute to a man who otherwise would have never been remembered at all. |

| I'm not sure it has anything to do with anything except a man who can't admit failure. Almost an obsessive-compulsive tone to the whole thing. He's so wrapped up in doing what he's doing to the disturbed standards hes's set in his own mind that he refuses to see things for what they really are... over. | |
