Mark Schultz – Think of Me Lyrics 14 years ago
The following was part of an interview with Mark Schultz concerning Song Cinema (the album this song is from):

"It's with Rachael Lampa and it's unbelievable. It's called "Think Of Me." We were on a mission trip at the end of the summer and the kids were going off to college. The whole story's about waking up that morning and knowing that we're all getting on different vans and going different places. It's a hard thing to do, but packing your bags seems really easy compared to saying goodbye. I chose Rachael to sing that duet because she is that age so it's a cool thing. It's a good graduation or goodbye song."
(Rachael Lampa was age 17 by time the CD was released)

Red – Hymn For The Missing Lyrics 15 years ago
The song as a whole seems to be compatible with the story which the album is based off of, Til We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. It seems to be from the main character Orual's perspective, talking to Psyche, another character. Can anyone think of a modern day Orual-Psyche relationship, for those who have read the book?

Very good idea! The notion that the first verse comes from a human perspective, and the chorus is sung by God seems very compatible. Can you think of any way the second verse would make sense with it though?

"I can feel you breathing" would suggest the incredible intimacy and closeness of God's presence.

Anberlin – (*Fin) Lyrics 15 years ago
This seems to be the fullest interpretation, very good! Those were my thoughts exactly!

Three things remain:
A) "Wish your drinking would hurry and kill you.
Sympathy's better than having to tell you the truth."
B) Who is the Patron Saint of lost causes?
..and..
C) Who is "we" and "you" in the first and third choruses?

a) Frydaddy22 had an interesting take on these two lines (7 posts after this one). He/she said that sometimes we choose to merely feel bad for someone rather than rebuking/convicting them. Perhaps the father, Tommy, is an alcoholic. On the other hand, maybe it is a spiritual drinking. Drinking of the Holy Spirit? Maybe the drinking symbolizes Tommy's hypocrisy or ignorance. Unfortunately, the "wish your drinking would hurry and kill you" part contradicts the sympathy mentioned in the next line. Hmm... What is your take on these two lines?

b) There's a few possibilities for the identity of the Patron Saint of lost causes (a saint who is the defender of lost causes). Lost causes are those who seem hopeless, yes? So who is the Patron Saint of lost causes? We know that
- The writer calls himself the Patron Saint of lost causes.
- Tommy is the Patron Saint of lost causes.
- The Patron Saint of lost causes is lost, hense "are we all lost like you?"
1) One possibility is that the lost causes are their own Patron Saints. This is supported by the idea that person is a lost cause because no one is there to defend their faith in the first place, making them lost causes. They must support themselves, making them their own defenders, their own Patron Saints.
2) Another possibility is that the Patron Saints are those who defend the lost causes *against* their faith whether intentionally or inadvertently , making the Patron Saints a bad influence. When the writer told God and the Devil to leave him alone, he was his own Patron Saint, "defending" himself against his faith. Tommy is called a Patron Saint because he "defends" the writer against his faith, as Stephen mentioned in the interview. It would also make sense that these Patron Saints are also lost causes themselves, explaining the choir's line.
3) A third possibility is that there is indeed ONE Patron Saint of lost causes which is represented through the writer, Tommy, and probably many others. This could be the Devil or the Devil's influence. The Devil defends us against a relationship with God, and wants to make us lost causes and keep us that way.
4) The last possibility is that the Patron Saint of lost causes is an idea, like hypocrisy or ignorance.
What is your take on this?

c) I was thinking that "we" refers to the lost causes themselves, and that "you" is God. The writer may be deceived to think that God has given up on them and sees them as lost causes. This seems to be the only option that makes some sense to me, though I'm still unsure. What do you think?

Red – Out From Under Lyrics 15 years ago
Perhaps "Out from Under" is merely a call to act. The song is about a life wasted and lost, longing for hope, longing for help, but to no avail. The person portrayed in this song is your neighbor, your friend, your sibling, your co-worker or schoolmate, a complete stranger. The song is a call to love and give hope to these people. They NEED it. Without Christ's redemption, they will finally break in the pressure. A sad song portraying a sad reality..

Red – Forever Lyrics 15 years ago
This has become one of my favorite songs of my life, primarily because of how I could connect with the words and the power behind those words.

"I try to run, I try to hide from a voice that couldn't satisfy
That was me, always needing more
But letting go of all I had before"

The singer claims that the voice was his own. The lyrics suggest that he once had a relationship with Christ, because 1) he knows that his own desires cannot satisfy his soul (something a Christian is aware of) and in fact tried to run away from them because he knew of the dangers, and 2) he let go of all he had before, potentially his affection towards God.

"Cause it feels like the end
A wound that I can't mend
I just can't fight any longer"

From the singer's perception, there seems to be no hope, the end. The wound that he cannot mend is his situation which he sees no way out of. He's giving up.

"You waited 'til I sobered
You came when You knew that the game was over
I didn't even want to be found"

God waited for the precise moment in time in which the singer would hear Him or recognize Him in some way. "Sobered" basically means "vulnerable to God's redemption". "The game" refers to the singer's rejection of a relationship with God. The singer then says that he didn't even want to be found -- the whole process of redemption was not his idea, much less something he chose to do.

"But you chased me down and broke in just when
I was done believing"

Ha! The most powerful part of the song -- the chorus. It's overall self-explanatory and uses a lot of rich imagery. The idea that God chased the singer down and broke in suggests that the singer had locked Him out in a way. I LOVE the fact that Christ pursues us despite our complete rejection of Him! And He knows the best time and method with which to step back into our perception and turn us around (just when I was done believing)!

"Spun me 'round so close now
I can feel you breathing
Sunlight burns inside and
I feel so alive and"

After the singer's reconciliation with God (spun me 'round so close) comes the singer's description of the feeling of God's presence, like being one with Him (I can feel You breathing). Sunlight (light most often signifies truth) BURNS inside -- not a hurtful burn, but a strong awareness of the light.

"Help me now, tell me how
How can this last forever
Forever"

The singer is in awe of how the incredible feeling of God's presence could last forever.

"I ignored the signs, opened every door
But I couldn't find what I searched for
I try to fight but I turn and run
Every move I make is the wrong one"

The singer seems to still be searching for satisfaction, ignoring the newfound idea that only God can satisfy (ignored the signs). The singer recognizes his mistakes and is once again slowly believing the lie that he is of no worth.

"You patiently wait for my next mistake
I know it won't be much longer"

The Lord patiently waits for our inevitable disobedience to Him. He then forgives every single time.

"You gave me so much more
Than I could ever ask for
But I turned and followed
A road the left me hollow
And still you waited for me to come back home
You brought me home"

The singer is now recalling his period of an intimate relationship with God, and his period of rejection towards God, which left him dissatisfied (hollow, empty). The singer recalls how in the end, the Lord was patient with him, and led him back into a divine relationship (home is a place of comfort and shelter, which is God).
