This is one of the hit-songs from Arthur (or the decline and fall of the British Empire), the other one is Shangri-La. It is a concept album - liner notes: "Arthur Morgan ... lives in a London suburb in a house called Shangri-La, with a garden and a car and a wife called Rose and a son called Derek who's married to Liz, and they have these two very nice kids, Terry and Marilyn. Derek and Liz and Terry and Marilyn are emigrating to Australia. Arthur did have another son, called Eddie. He was named for Arthur's brother, who was killed in the battle of the Somme. Arthur's Eddie was killed, too—in Korea" So this song is very satirical and expresses how the working class should be proud of the Queen and The Empire - all falling apart during the 20th century. Excellent lyrics! |

| The Small Faces – Itchycoo Park Lyrics | 8 years ago |

Over bridge of sighs = A bridge located near the university in Cambridge To rest my eyes in shades of green = enjoying your upper-class money Under dreaming spires = Oxford, the city of dreaming spires To Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been = the small suburban back-yard, covered with stingy nettles Knowing that he will never reach the life of the upper classes, maybe borrow money for a second-hand life he just finds the chemical way to his Shangri-La: (What did you do there?) I got high (What did you feel there?) well, I cried (But why the tears there?) tell you why It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful You can miss out school (won't that be cool?) why go to learn the words of fools? The rebellious attitude against the English schooling system... Teachers leave the kids alone.... (Thanks Ian McLagan...) |

| The Kinks – Denmark Street Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Denmark street was in London the same as Tin Pan Alley in NY, the street where the publishers was. In the 60's the music business didn't like pop bands lika Kinks - but they loved their money. Nuff said. A brilliant song by a brilliant writer. |
