I absolutely love this song. It's easily one of my favorites. It's perfect. I would say that the lyrics are the best part of it but there is so much more that I know contributes to it... His voice is incredible, it has this feeling of every sadness imaginable, pain, mourning, self-defeat, etc and yet it sounds clear beautiful. The same goes for the instrumental. They both have this sound of a sort of unachievable perfection in their clarity and yet they attain this deep sense of reality in the emotion they give off. But on top of all that, the lyrics are incredibly powerful. They seem quite clearly to be about a struggle with God and not understanding him co-existing with all the pain in the world and in his life. I think it's very clear that the artist has incorporated a powerful part of his own life in this song. |

I do think it's quite clear that this song is about suicide but there was an interesting interpretation I heard of it once that I thought was very interesting Supposedly if you hang yourself, it feels like you're drowning... which would explain all the references to the ocean. |

The only part of the song that would make that confusing is the "left my mother's mother" But the concept you're implying is actually really interesting not to mention powerful. |
