Broken Bells – Leave It Alone Lyrics 11 years ago
Me too! This song instantly stood out to me from the album. I've had intense dreams involving this topic - about confronting my parents on certain beliefs and emotional trauma always ensues. I've never had the courage to challenge my parents in real life. Yet, our differences in perspective keep us from having a healthy relationship. Its so hard...

Maybe its a mid-late age parent opening up to a child after an extended period of estrangement. The child and parent don't see eye-eye; and its mostly over the issue of faith. The child is self-reliant and values truth, while the parent is conventional, conservative. The parent holds on to the dream of an afterlife, while the child sees this faith as irrational, and as repressed death anxiety, "the heart of all my pain." Its like the parent acknowledges he/she might be wrong, but then so might the child. At any rate, the parent is too stuck in their ways, a change in philosophy at this stage of life would be too great a shock to the system. So to the child, please just leave it alone.

Phantogram – When I'm Small Lyrics 11 years ago
I'd like to add my Jungian dream analysis + an explanation of "mouse to feed" to what others have said about this beautiful song. I think this is a breakup song but is also very psychological and dreamy. I think Lucy represents aspects of the narrator's hidden self (i.e. creativity, sensitivity, capacity for love). I bet the name "Lucy" is chosen in reference to the Beatles' "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" as others have mentioned. This is because "Lucy in the Sky" is the opposite of Lucy in the ground... its like your creativity flourishing vs. your creativity dormant. In this song when she says "Am I Underground, or am I in between?" she's questioning whether the person that has manifested in her behavior, her self in this detrimental relationship is even her true self at all! Its not. The self that has manifested is referred to as the Persona in Jungian psychology. It is the mask that we put on for people but it is not our true inner self. Ok, before I forget, I decoded "Mouse to feed." In dreams, mice represent that you are worrying too much about insignificant matters in life and/or someone is feeding on your creative resources, like mice nawing away. So Lucy has both a "mouth" and "mouse" to feed. Her creativity needs to be fed, but instead this mouse (Her lover that she would rather die than be with) is a parasite to her creative energy. Lastly, I think "hand on the button" refers to those times when her lover bushed those buttons, cutting at the core of her soul, but it was not out of love, it was out of deceit or malice.

The Flaming Lips – The Gash Lyrics 12 years ago
I really like the other comments, especially about how we all have wounds and that it is inspiring to see people battle on. I am struggling with depression right now. I am in a fight for my life, we all are I guess. Studying philosophy for a year can make your head swim. Some say question everything. I agree, but please do so with caution and social support because it can become as addictive as anything else. Answers are more elusive than they seem.

"Now that we've lost all the reasons
That we thought that we had"

I interpret that to be like assuming a new philosophy. After so many times of changing your belief system you start to lose hope in truth.

Uh Huh Her – Covered Lyrics 12 years ago
To me its about falling in love. How do you turn it off/on? Does it ever last forever? Would you want it to? To be illuminated one must first be in the dark. To appreciate the beauty you have to experience the ugly too.

Garbage – Not Your Kind Of People Lyrics 13 years ago
Great Points, and I'm really glad you have accepted yourself. I still haven't fully accepted myself as the way I am, mostly because of my anti-social nature. I live a lie to some extent, (maybe everyone does though, in order to best fit in with society)The stanza that you posted is probably my favorite set of lyrics and musical moment of the album. Every word digs into me like a dagger. I hate people and crowds, but want to be loved by people (its just such a conundrum)

Like you, I am deeply introspective. It is so comforting for me to live in my own mind, if I could live a dream I probably would. However, I want so badly to connect with people. I reject my true personality, and resort to imitating normal people in my conversation and behaviors. I want to be social, and I hate myself for not having the tools to be charismatic or attractive. I have many friends, none of which seem to like garbage or a lot of my favorite music that has darker, deeper appeal. Its sad, because I know just from that revelation that I must be different from a lot of people.

I checked out the man on a wire quote. That is pretty inspiring. I still have not overcome my fear of people.

But its nice to know that other people like this music and can relate, I guess.

I really like this interpretation as well. When I listen to the song while interpreting it this way, it sounds like Shirley is pleading with herself by the last refrain after the bridge, telling herself she is different, and she has finally accepted it, but in the light of the world she is just like everyone else. Dark Dark stuff.

Garbage – Felt Lyrics 13 years ago
Classic (Feeler vs. Thinker) Battle.

The Verses:

The narrator is in love with a Logic-driven person who doesn't appear to feel emotions like the singer does. (The person on the other side of this conversation could be "The Scientist" as written by Chris Martin and Coldplay.

I think the "They're only feelings baby" line is what the the Logical partner is saying back to her.

As they grow apart, she realizes she stops caring while he thinks she has lost faith (Classically how logical people see relationships in a "We'll make it work sense"

The Refrain (What is real? Is Real Reason?):

Narrator argues that what she "Feels" is all that is worth savoring about the relationship and life (Reality). The Logical person might argue something contrary to this.

Butch Vig as well as Shirley and the other members have said that this is an "album for outsiders." The title track is an anthem for True Garbage fans who are social outcasts or are 'different' in some form or another. Same with the Closer "Beloved Freak"

Outsiders are beautiful and delicate. Delicate because the way that they see the world is not how others see the world. Constantly seeing different from other people wears on the outsider and pressures them to conform.

It is easy to get discouraged.

-Embrace your differences and take pride in them

BRILLIANT Title Track - ties the whole album together like a title track should. I am tempted to comment on the whole album at once when i think of this song.

I have only begun to dissect this. I know there is more here to comment on. I can't explain the "dropped by while i was sleeping" stanza yet except for the fact that Shirley turns around the "joke on you" element of the title on herself

BTW Brilliant title for an Indie album!? The joke is on 'you' so to speak, A Big F**K You towards haters

Garbage – So Like A Rose Lyrics 14 years ago
Definitely about suicide. However, more specifically about what transpires within one's mind once the decision is made to follow through. Your life begins to flash before your eyes. You become unstuck in time, the past, present, and future become one. Obviously I can only imagine what this feels like, as I have never felt certain I was about to die.

Shirley describes the boy as a "baby" and "like a rose." the most obvious interpretation of these comparisons is of beauty, delicacy and purity. When I listen, I also interpret the "baby" as being a child of perhaps God or a higher being. If you believe in an existence greater than life on earth, perhaps an afterlife, you may agree that the last line "I wish you could stay here" shows a great spiritual understanding of the narrator of this song. She wishes he could stay on earth but she realizes that there is something greater at work in the universe and that perhaps this boy was called for duty elsewhere.

spot on! you nailed it in my opinion. Not so much about suicide but what goes through your head when you contemplate it. Garbage is also my favorite band behind Radiohead

great post!

Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out) Lyrics 15 years ago
okay so i know what Thom said about this song, about it being so emotionally draining, looking the devil in the eyes, etc. My personal interpretation agrees with what some comments have said about it being about earth and our Apocalypse. We will one day swallow everything on this planet including our material possessions as the world collapses in on itself.

However, I don't get why Thom does not think it has at least a glimmer of resolve, or emotional inspiration. The last lines are "Emerse your soul in love"... as if to say (find love now in any way you can before the world ends) I think it has a great message in the end. I don't know what Thom is talking about...

Garbage – Drive You Home Lyrics 15 years ago
I picture a relationship where an individual puts up a shell of strength and always seems so in control. She abuses him and tries to control him, always driving him home. This song is about her finally being honest with him and owning up to her treatment of him and telling him her own vulnerabilities. After all the times she drove him home, she finally needs to be driven home herself because she is a mess. "Can you take me home?" fittingly ends the song as opposed to the title of the song.

Garbage – I'm Only Happy When it Rains Lyrics 15 years ago
About what many would consider Borderline Personality Disorder. She only gets enjoyment out of her own misery and the misery of others. When it rains, nobody else enjoys the day and that is her comfort zone.

Interesting point Victorb: That makes sense. Who could Top the comment of "I'm only happy when it rains" in a conversation about one's troubles. Haha, it makes me laugh.
