I think the line "don't stand so close to me" is referring to the male teacher attempting to remove himself from the temptation. I don't see anything in the lyrics to indicate that the girl is trying to resist it. In fact, the lyrics "She wants him so badly knows what she wants to be/Inside her there's longing/This girl's an open page" and "Her friends are so jealous/You know how bad girls get" seem to imply that the girl is trying to encourage a relationship and maybe even purposefully tempting him. He wants her away from him to prevent the temptation, I've been down that road, feelings are feelings and it's not easy to fight them sometimes. I have physically left places because of this, it would be improper for me to pursue the woman in question and yet she continues coming on to me. And note, there is nothing wrong or immoral about the teachers attraction, it is how a well-adjusted, healthy, and normal man should react to an attractive female coming on to him. The societal rules he lives under says it's wrong for the girl and him to pursue their feelings, and he should be commended for attempting to remove himself from the temptation. |
