Amen, cynthia ruth. I,too, love every single strokes song. And i mean, i love every strokes song more than i love almost anything else in the world. Anyway, I kind of agree that this song sounds like it's about jules's dislike of doing interviews. i feel like the song is about that and being depressed about injustices. i think he is talking about having political debates to the point of being sick of just talking, hence the chorus i got nothing to say. it says on the side of the lyrics SHARP MINDS THINK ALIKE, ALL YOU NEED IS THE PAST. he is saying smart people discuss their opinions but he as a celebrity doesnt like to get into that for his own reasons. he would rather keep his thoughts to himself, particularly as opposed to being interviewed.

The Strokes – On The Other Side Lyrics 15 years ago
i definitely agree that this song is about julian's alcoholism and how it made him feel about life and people around him and everything. and i strongly agree w/ intheexevening sun. at the end i really think he's talking about Sam. after re-reading the lyrics, it iseems to fit b/c jules talks a lot about how sam inspired him and his music.i think he is talking about how everyone, sam included, wanted him to get it together and thats what he means by sam and everyone is waiting for him. i think what he means by the other side is general happiness and sobriety. either that, or like someone else said he was talking about someone he loves who died and the other side is heaven and hell. i really think he is talking about sam though. just fits better. in this case, in the first few versus i think when he said no one is waiting on the other side he is talking about his struggle to get clean b/c he didnt really believe at first that things would be better if he got sober until he became more open minded.

The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics 15 years ago
i get the reference to self-harming (cutting), and that's what I wanted to comment on . This song is all about narcissism, hands down. It just happens to be in the context of a relationship in this song, but I don't think that's what most important- what's important is the girl in this song and her self-absorption. The whole razor blade thing- to me, it seems like the person whom this song is referencing is so selfish and sel-involved that she'll do anything to keep the focus on her, even cut herself for attention. That's what I took it to mean. Hence the lines "my feelings are more important than yours". The girl in this song is all like "look at me, pay attention to me. who cares about you". She think she's the center of the relationship and the guy isnt giving her enough attention so she'll cut herself to get his, and anyone else's, attention.

i dont agree with the person who said the whole cd's about juliet, i highly doubt that. could just be me being in denial though, lol.love jules' voice on this song. and god,i can sense nikolai's presence in this song from the first second. even before i knew he helped w/ it, i was like wow this has nikolai written all over it. to me this song is about problems b/w two people that feels so bad its like the end of the world.

The Strokes – You Only Live Once Lyrics 15 years ago
to me this song is about tolerance, and all the things the world has to offer, so why not experience as much of it as you can in this one life we have. the song talks about everything from men and women relations to religion, etc. it's about trying new things instead of always bashing or arguing with people trying to make them see things your way- why not try it theirs or do something new? after all, as the title says you only live once, and with soo many different cultures, opinions, entertainment styles, people,etc- why limit yourself? to me that's what ht esong is all about

The Strokes – I'll Try Anything Once Lyrics 15 years ago
about the whole 1984 thing.....i don't it referes to any one person or that the song is necessarily dedicated to someone. i think that 1984 line might possibly be a reference to the book 1984. someone on youtube said that, and after they said it i agree with them. anyway.....the way i see it, this song is about LIFE- in general, and the differet parts of life. The 1st verse is about education- your early years, the second, talking about failure and everyone playing the game, is about (perhaps) work and career. or at least it can be realted to that. every one is so pressured to be successful and wealthy,, but no one's perfect- we all mess up at work some times, and struggle- but we continue in the rat race of work and economy b/c we need the money and we all have this drive to be successful, hence the "everybody plays the game, and if you don't you're called insane." the last verse is about perhaps about the social aspect of life- dating, relationships, relating to other people and forming friendships/bonds with those of your gender and those who are not. to me that verse is like observations noe might make from just spending time with people in a social setting. i think the few other parts ("when i said i can see me in your eyes...", "dont dont dont dont...", and the "why not try it all"....) to me those are things you might experience during each as[ect of life that's mentioned. the friendship-romance part sounds like a conversation b/w two young people, the 1984 verse could be maybe relating to how one might look to novels for life lessons (if the person i came across who suggested the 1984 part is about the book, is right), and the "why not try it all" part is about how we might not like everything in life but we shouldn't shut ourselves off from it oor others, we should try to experience as much as possible while we still have the time

The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics 15 years ago
think it's about sophmore album blues. them wanting to remain treu to what they are and do what they want, the industry people (and the media) wanting themto focus on image or something else along those lines. ("whose culture is this or does anybody know") and the 2nd verse...maybe the reference to tennessee williams is meant to be about how they want to do music that;s meaningful, like tennessee's work, but others want them to do stuff that's more popular, light, and fun. "but that's and ending that i can't write, cause i've got you to let me down".to me the "you" is the industry people andthe media, etc. love this song (my favorite strokes song) listen to it multiple times every day right when i get home from work.

ok, i agree that the song is about the sophmore album blues. u know, when an artist/band gets to be really well-liked and suddenly all the industry people want to focus more on image and popularity than quality music.the 1st verse fits that really well, particularly the countdown part and "who's culture is this or does anybody know". as for the 2nd verse...maybe he's trying to say that they want to do meaningful music that they like and as long as the 5b of them like ti that's all they care about, but there are all these forces trying to mold them into something they're not. That could be why he refers to tennessee williams (wanting to talk about something meaningful, like tennessee's work) and that may be what's meant by the "but that;s and ending that i can't write, cause i've got you to let me down". maybe the "you" is al the industry people. this is just one person's opinion, however. anyway, this is my favorite strokes song of all. listen to it every day. 1st thing i do when i get home is play it- twice.

Julian Casablancas – Glass Lyrics 15 years ago
i think this song is about all the negativity that'ss been thrown at juliet by women who are upset that she's married to julian. i,too heard the song was dedicated to her, and i think the song is about all the hurtful things that have been said about her and the "bulletproof glass" is their relationship. He's sayin how people can say what they like, she shouldn't be worried, as long as they love each other and have each other. The reason I take this interpetation is b/c of how in the cd jacket right above Glass it says something like "talk about those absent as if they are listening in". Seems like the song is about how some people who talk bad about juliet and their relationship think that it goes unnoticed but it doesnt and it's hurtful, but their relationship is strong and secure. just my interpretation. Anyway, I love jules, I love the strokes, and this song is my 3rd favorite on jules's album (behind ludlow st and 4 chords of the apocalypse.)
